Section 2 (Engine-SVT): Removal: Engine: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

    All Vehicles 

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  2. WARNING: To prevent the risk of scalding, place a thick cloth over the filler cap before opening the cooling circuit. Failure to do so can result in injury.
  3. Release the coolant system pressure.
  4. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  5. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery terminal clamp.
  6. Remove the air cleaner. .
  7. Detach the ground cable from the inner fender.

  8. NOTE: The resonator is a push fit in the bracket.

  9. Remove the air cleaner intake tube and resonator.
  10. Loosen the axle stub nut.

  11. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to JACKING & HOISTING .
  12. Remove the right hand front wheel. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
  13. WARNING: Danger of scalding if the engine is warm.
  14. Drain the coolant (shown from below).
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Install the drain plug after draining.

  15. Drain the engine oil.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Install the drain plug after draining.
  16. Partially lower the vehicle.
  17. Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount retaining nuts by three turns on both sides.

  18. Detach the accelerator cable and the speed control cable (if equipped) from the throttle body.

  19. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.

  20. Disconnect the ground cable from the engine lifting eye.

  21. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

  22. WARNING: Escaping brake fluid. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with the skin or eyes. If brake fluid should come into contact with your skin or eyes, rinse the affected area immediately with water.
    CAUTION: If any brake fluid gets on the paintwork wash it off immediately with water.
  23. Detach the hydraulic line from the clutch slave cylinder.
    • Remove the clip.
    • Remove the clutch line and secure it to one side using cable ties.

  24. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.

  25. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.

  26. Detach the brake booster pipe from the intake manifold.

    Release the quick release coupling and detach the brake booster pipe.

  27. Detach the coolant expansion tank and position it to one side.

  28. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir.
  29. Disconnect the power steering supply hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.

  30. WARNING: Escaping fuel. Observe the safety regulations for working with fuel.

  31. Detach the fuel lines.
  32. Detach the coolant hoses from the thermostat housing.

  33. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Detach the gearshift cable and the selector cable from the selector levers.
    2. Detach the retaining bracket from the transaxle.

  34. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE .
  35. Vehicles with air conditioning 

  36. Detach the air conditioning compressor and secure it to the radiator crossmember.

  37. All vehicles 

  38. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  39. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  40. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

  41. Disconnect the heated oxygen (HO2S) sensor and the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  42. Disconnect the radiator lower coolant hose from the radiator.

  43. Detach the coolant hose from the oil cooler.

  44. Remove the flexible exhaust pipe.

  45. Remove the crossmember. .
  46. CAUTION: The halfshaft stub nut can be re-used four times, mark the nut.
  47. Detach the front drive halfshaft from the wheel hub.
    • Unscrew and remove the drive halfshaft stub nut and press out the drive halfshaft stub from the wheel hub using a commercially available puller.

  48. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION: Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE: Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
  49. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and the intermediate shaft.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the center bearing cap and locknuts.

  50. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION: Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE: Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
  51. Using the special tools, detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the snap ring.

  52. Position the workshop table with suitable wooden blocks under the engine and transmission assembly.
  53. Carefully lower the vehicle until the engine and transmission assembly is positioned on the workshop table.
  54. Using a suitable securing strap, secure the engine and transmission assembly to the workshop table.

  55. Remove the engine rear mount.

  56. Remove the engine front mount.

  57. Carefully raise the vehicle.
    • Pull forwards the assembly stand.
  58. Using the special tools, secure the engine and transmission assembly on an engine hoist.

  59. CAUTION: The catalytic converter must be supported while the support bracket is removed.

  60. Remove the catalytic converter support bracket.
  61. Detach the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.
    • Discard the gasket and nuts.

  62. Remove the transaxle upper retaining bolts.

  63. Remove the starter motor upper retaining bolts.
    • Detach the ground cable from the transaxle.

  64. Detach the starter motor from the transaxle and secure it to one side.

  65. Remove the transaxle right-hand retaining bolts.

  66. Remove the transaxle left-hand retaining bolts.

  67. Remove the transaxle.
