Driver-Side Air Bag Module: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Monterey and 2004 Ford Freestar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. DO NOT activate air bag system at this time. When installing air bag module in steering wheel, align 4 air bag module springs to steering wheel seats. At top, springs will align into cups. At bottom, springs will align around pins. Ensure spring clip is behind tabs.
  2. Ensure steering wheel back cover is seated all the way around in steering wheel mating groove. Tighten steering wheel gear drive to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Remove air bag simulator from driver-side air bag module connector and reconnect connector. Close access door.
  3. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all remaining deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
