Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford ZX2 and 2002 Ford Escort. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

ECS module is mounted on the center tunnel, under instrument panel. See Figure . The ECS contains a microcomputer, which monitors electrical system components and connections. ECS performs a system self-check of air bag system internal circuits every time ignition switch is turned to RUN position. ECS also energizes AIR BAG warning light during initial system self-check and whenever a fault is detected. Faults are stored in ECS memory and translated into flash codes, which are displayed through AIR BAG warning light. ECS also communicates through Data Link Connector (DLC) current and historical Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If a system fault exists and AIR BAG warning light is malfunctioning, ECS activates a chime in warning chime module, indicating need for service.

ECS also employs a keep-alive period that allows ECS to remain powered and active for about 6 minutes after ignition switch is turned to OFF position. During this period, ECS is performing back up power supply regulation and crash discrimination, while being capable of all deployment functions.
