Disabling System

  1. Turn all vehicle accessories off. Turn the ignition switch to off. At the Smart Junction Box (SJB), located below the left side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse F2.17 (10A) from the SJB.
  2. Turn the ignition on and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding. Turn the ignition off.
  3. Record radio preset frequencies for reprogramming (if equipped). Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for backup power supply to deplete stored energy.
  4. Remove access panel on rear of steering wheel. See Fig 1. Disconnect air bag module connector. Connect appropriate air bag simulator to clockspring connector at top of steering column (in place of air bag). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
  5. Open glove box. Press in on sides to release stops and lower glove box. Disconnect passenger air bag module electrical connector. Connect appropriate air bag simulator to passenger air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
  6. NOTE: If vehicle is not equipped with safety canopies, do not deactivate the safety canopy module circuit by removing the safety canopy bridge resistor from the safety canopy bridge resistor electrical connector. If the safety canopy bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the RCM. If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the safety canopy electrical connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.
NOTE: If vehicle is not equipped with side air bags, do not deactivate the side air bag module circuit by removing the side air bag bridge resistor from the side air bag bridge resistor electrical connector. If the side air bag bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the RCM. If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the side air bag electrical connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.
  7. On vehicles with safety canopies and side air bags, Remove the safety belt guide cover. Remove the safety belt guide bolt and safety belt guide. Remove the screws and attachments. To remove the "D" pillar trim panel, separate the weatherstrip. Separate the quarter trim panel at the "D" pillar trim panel. Remove the "D" pillar trim panel. Disconnect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
  8. Remove the driver side second row safety belt guide cover by squeezing the height adjuster buttons and pulling the cover out at the bottom. Remove the driver side second row safety belt guide bolt and safety belt guide. To, remove the trim panel, separate the weatherstrip. Separate the quarter trim panel at the "C" pillar trim panel. Remove the "C" pillar trim panel. Pry out at the side and remove the coat hook cover. Remove the screw and the coat hook. From between the headliner and the roof of the vehicle, just to the front of the "C" pillar, disconnect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.
  9. To disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector, slide and disengage the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip. Push in to release the tab and disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR . Repeat procedure for driver side. Connect negative battery cable. Install the RCM fuse F2.17 (10A) to the SJB.
