Steering Column - Column Shift: Assembly

  1. All vehicles

    Install the steering column lock actuators.
    1. Use grease to lubricate the steering column lock actuators.
    2. Install the steering column lock actuators.

  2. NOTE: Coat all surfaces with grease.

  3. Install the steering column lock pawl.
    1. Position the steering column lock pawl.
    2. Drive in the steering column lock lever pin.
  4. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    1. Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    2. Install the three bolts.

  5. NOTE: The "UP" position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.
    NOTE: Install the steering column bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.

  6. Install the steering column bearing and sleeve.
  7. Install the ignition switch. Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column. Install the bolts.

  8. Install the transmission control selector lever spring clip and the gearshift lever socket bushings on the shift tube.
    • Coat the gearshift lever socket bushings with grease.

  9. Install the column shift selector lever plunger.
    • Coat the column shift selector plunger with grease.

  10. Position the gearshift lever in the shift tube.

  11. CAUTION: Gearshift lever pin must be installed correctly or 1st gear position can be blocked.

  12. Install the gearshift lever pin in the shift tube.
  13. Install the gearshift selector tube spring in the shift tube.
    • Coat the end of the spring with grease.

  14. Install the transmission selector lever arm and support on the shift tube.
    1. Position the transmission selector lever arm and support.
    2. Install the bolts.

  15. Install the shift tube.
    1. Position the shift tube.
    2. Position the shift tube clamps.
    3. Install the bolts.

  16. Position the brake shift interlock solenoid and install the bolts.

  17. CAUTION: Install the upper steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.

  18. Using an appropriate bearing installer or socket; install the upper steering column bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.
  19. CAUTION: Install the large steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

  20. Vehicles with tilt steering columns
    Install the large steering column bearing into the steering column lock cylinder housing.
  21. All vehicles

    Position the steering column shaft in the steering column lock cylinder housing.
    • Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring on the steering column shaft.

  22. Install the steering column bearing sleeve.

  23. Install the steering column bearing spring.

  24. Install the snap ring.

  25. Install the turn signal cancel cam.

  26. Install the lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.

  27. NOTE: Lubricate the lock cylinder housing bushings with rust penetrant.

  28. Position the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft on the steering actuator housing.
    • Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.
  29. Position the steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
    1. Use a shop-fabricated tool.
    2. On tilt steering columns, install and compress the steering column position spring.

    Vehicles with tilt steering columns 

  30. Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing, and tighten the lock cylinder housing screws.

  31. Vehicles with fixed steering columns

    Install the steering column spacer. Tighten the two lock cylinder housing screws.
    • The steering column spacer is installed on the LH side of the steering column.

  32. All vehicles

    Install the multifunction switch.
    1. Position the multifunction switch.
    2. Connect the electrical connectors.
    3. Install the 2 screws.

  33. Position the transmission control switch (TCS) harness on it's locators and the gearshift lever cover to the steering column.

  34. Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.

  35. Vehicles with tilt steering columns

    Install the sensor ring.
    1. Install the sensor ring.
    2. Install the steering column bearing spring.

  36. Vehicles with fixed steering columns

    Install the snap ring.

  37. NOTE: The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear must be in the one o'clock position.

  38. All vehicles
    Install the steering column lock gear.
    • Use grease to coat the steering column lock gear.
  39. Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
    • The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the one o'clock position With the tab inboard at the three o'clock position, rotate it counterclockwise.
    • Lubricate the steering column lock housing bearing with grease.

  40. Install the steering column upper bearing retainer firmly to engage the four retention tabs into the lock housing.

  41. Position the clockspring onto the steering column shaft.
    1. Align the clockspring onto the steering column shaft.
    2. Slide the clockspring down the steering column shaft and lock the clips into place.

  42. Engage the lower clockspring retaining clip into place.

  43. Position the ground wire and install the bolt.

  44. Route the wire harness into the two holders (one shown).

  45. Install the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch to the steering column.

  46. Install the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transmitter.
    1. Position the PATS transmitter to the steering column.
    2. Install the PATS transmitter retaining screw.

  47. Position the upper steering column shroud to the steering column.

  48. Install the lower steering column shroud.
    1. Position the lower steering column shroud to the steering column and the upper steering column shroud.
    2. Install the screws.

  49. If equipped, install the tilt wheel handle and shank.

  50. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder.
    • Align and install the ignition switch lock cylinder to the steering column.
      • Position the ignition switch lock cylinder to the off position.

  51. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the steering column removal and installation procedure.
  52. Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column .
