Steering Column - Column Shift: Assembly
- All vehicles
Install the steering column lock actuators.- Use grease to lubricate the steering column lock actuators.
- Install the steering column lock actuators.
- Install the steering column lock pawl.
- Position the steering column lock pawl.
- Drive in the steering column lock lever pin.
- Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Install the three bolts.
- Install the steering column bearing and sleeve.
- Install the ignition switch. Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column. Install the bolts.
- Install the transmission control selector lever spring clip and the gearshift lever socket bushings on the shift tube.
- Coat the gearshift lever socket bushings with grease.
- Install the column shift selector lever plunger.
- Coat the column shift selector plunger with grease.
- Position the gearshift lever in the shift tube.
- Install the gearshift lever pin in the shift tube.
- Install the gearshift selector tube spring in the shift tube.
- Coat the end of the spring with grease.
- Install the transmission selector lever arm and support on the shift tube.
- Position the transmission selector lever arm and support.
- Install the bolts.
- Install the shift tube.
- Position the shift tube.
- Position the shift tube clamps.
- Install the bolts.
- Position the brake shift interlock solenoid and install the bolts.
- Using an appropriate bearing installer or socket; install the upper steering column bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- Vehicles with tilt steering columns
Install the large steering column bearing into the steering column lock cylinder housing. - All vehicles
Position the steering column shaft in the steering column lock cylinder housing.- Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring on the steering column shaft.
- Install the steering column bearing sleeve.
- Install the steering column bearing spring.
- Install the snap ring.
- Install the turn signal cancel cam.
- Install the lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.
- Position the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft on the steering actuator housing.
- Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.
- Position the steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
- Use a shop-fabricated tool.
- On tilt steering columns, install and compress the steering column position spring.

Vehicles with tilt steering columns
- Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing, and tighten the lock cylinder housing screws.
- Vehicles with fixed steering columns
Install the steering column spacer. Tighten the two lock cylinder housing screws.- The steering column spacer is installed on the LH side of the steering column.
- All vehicles
Install the multifunction switch.- Position the multifunction switch.
- Connect the electrical connectors.
- Install the 2 screws.
- Position the transmission control switch (TCS) harness on it's locators and the gearshift lever cover to the steering column.
- Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
- Vehicles with tilt steering columns
Install the sensor ring.- Install the sensor ring.
- Install the steering column bearing spring.
- Vehicles with fixed steering columns
Install the snap ring. - All vehicles
Install the steering column lock gear.- Use grease to coat the steering column lock gear.
- Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
- The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the one o'clock position With the tab inboard at the three o'clock position, rotate it counterclockwise.
- Lubricate the steering column lock housing bearing with grease.
- Install the steering column upper bearing retainer firmly to engage the four retention tabs into the lock housing.
- Position the clockspring onto the steering column shaft.
- Align the clockspring onto the steering column shaft.
- Slide the clockspring down the steering column shaft and lock the clips into place.
- Engage the lower clockspring retaining clip into place.
- Position the ground wire and install the bolt.
- Route the wire harness into the two holders (one shown).
- Install the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch to the steering column.
- Install the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transmitter.
- Position the PATS transmitter to the steering column.
- Install the PATS transmitter retaining screw.
- Position the upper steering column shroud to the steering column.
- Install the lower steering column shroud.
- Position the lower steering column shroud to the steering column and the upper steering column shroud.
- Install the screws.
- If equipped, install the tilt wheel handle and shank.
- Install the ignition switch lock cylinder.
- Align and install the ignition switch lock cylinder to the steering column.
- Position the ignition switch lock cylinder to the off position.
- Align and install the ignition switch lock cylinder to the steering column.
- Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column .
NOTE:
Coat all surfaces with grease.
NOTE:
The "UP" position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.
NOTE:
Install the steering column bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.
CAUTION:
Gearshift lever pin must be installed correctly or 1st gear position can be blocked.
CAUTION:
Install the upper steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
CAUTION:
Install the large steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
NOTE:
Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.
NOTE:
Lubricate the lock cylinder housing bushings with rust penetrant.

NOTE:
The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear must be in the one o'clock position.
