Steering Column - Console Shift: Assembly

  1. All Vehicles

    Install the steering column lock lever actuator.
    1. Lubricate the steering column lock lever actuator with grease.
    2. Install the steering column lock lever actuator.

  2. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    1. Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    2. Install the three bolts.

  3. NOTE: The "UP" position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.
    NOTE: Install the steering column bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.

  4. Install the steering column bearing and sleeve.
  5. CAUTION: Install the steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

  6. Install the steering column bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.
  7. CAUTION: Install the steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

  8. Vehicles with tilt steering columns
    Install the steering column bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.
  9. All vehicles

    Position the steering column shaft in the steering column lock cylinder housing.
    • Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring on the steering column shaft.

  10. Install the steering column bearing sleeve.

  11. Install the steering column upper bearing spring.

  12. Install the snap ring.

  13. Install the lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.

  14. Install the turn signal cancel cam.

  15. NOTE: Lubricate the lock cylinder housing bushings with grease.

  16. Position the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft on the steering actuator housing.
    • Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.
  17. Position the steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
    1. Use a shop fabricated tool.
    2. On tilt steering columns, install and compress the steering column position spring.

  18. Vehicles with tilt steering columns

    Tighten the lock cylinder housing screws.

  19. Vehicles with fixed steering columns

    Install the steering column spacer. Tighten the two lock cylinder housing screws.
    • The steering column spacer is installed on the LH side of the steering column.

  20. All vehicles

    Install the multifunction switch.
    1. Position the multifunction switch.
    2. Connect the electrical connectors.
    3. Install the 2 screws.

  21. Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.

  22. Vehicles with tilt steering columns

    Install the sensor ring.
    1. Install the sensor ring.
    2. Install the steering column lower bearing spring.

  23. Vehicles with fixed steering columns

    Install the snap ring.

  24. All vehicles

    Install the ignition switch. Tighten bolts to specification.

  25. NOTE: The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear should be in the one o'clock position.

  26. Install the steering column lock gear.
    • Use grease to coat the steering column lock gear.
  27. Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
    • The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the one o'clock position. With the tab inboard at the three o'clock position, rotate it counterclockwise.
    • Lubricate the steering column lock housing bearing with grease.

  28. Install the steering column upper bearing retainer firmly to engage the four retention tabs into the lock housing.

  29. Position the clockspring onto the steering column shaft.
    1. Align the clockspring onto the steering column shaft.
    2. Slide the clockspring down the steering column shaft and lock the clips into lace.

  30. Engage the lower clockspring retaining clip into place.

  31. Position the ground wire and install the bolt.

  32. Route the wire harness into the two holders (one shown).

  33. Install the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch to the steering column.

  34. Install the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transmitter.
    1. Position the PATS transmitter to the steering column.
    2. Install the PATS transmitter retaining screw.

  35. Position the upper steering column shroud to the steering column.

  36. Install the lower steering column shroud.
    1. Position the lower steering column shroud to the steering column and the upper steering column shroud.
    2. Install the screws.

  37. If equipped, install the tilt wheel handle and shank.

  38. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder.
    • Align and install the ignition switch lock cylinder to the steering column.
    • Position the ignition switch lock cylinder to the off position.

  39. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the steering column removal and installation procedure.
