Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Disconnect battery before disconnecting Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connectors. Failure to do so will result in GEM storing erroneous codes and may also result in erratic operation of GEM after reconnecting.
CAUTION: If replacing GEM, it is necessary to upload module configuration information to New Generation Star (NGS) tester. After installation, this information needs to be downloaded into replacement GEM module.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Remove bulkhead electrical harness connectors (C270a and C270b) from central junction box (interior fuse panel). Unbolt and remove central junction box. Disconnect GEM electrical harness connectors. Remove screws and disconnect GEM from backside of central junction box. To install, reverse removal procedure.
