Hard Start When Operating on E85 Fuel - Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Recalibration

PROGRAM TERMS

This program extends the warranty coverage for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration to 10 years of service or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first. This additional coverage provides a one-time calibration software update of the PCM and is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.

VEHICLES COVERED BY THIS PROGRAM

Certain 2004-2006 Model Year Taurus and certain 2004-2005 Mercury Sable Flex Fuel Vehicles built at the Atlanta and Chicago Assembly Plants from March 11, 2003 through March 31, 2006. Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS.

REASON FOR PROVIDING ADDITIONAL COVERAGE

Certain 2004-2006 Model Year Taurus and certain 2004-2005 Mercury Sable customers with a 3.0L 2V FFV engine and fueling with ethanol E85 may experience hard to start conditions on the first cold start of the day. The hard to start condition may consist of multiple key cranking events to obtain normal engine operation, or customer perceived long cranks to obtain normal engine operation. Once the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature, the condition ceases. This condition only exists when operating on E85 fuel.

SERVICE ACTION

If a customer reports that one of the affected vehicles experiences a hard starting condition while operating on E85 fuel, dealers are to reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release B46.6 or higher. This one-time repair will be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.

NOTE: Do not perform this reflash unless requested to do so by the customer.

EXTENDED COVERAGE PROGRAM 06N07

CERTAIN 2004 THROUGH 2006 MODEL YEAR TAURUS AND SABLE 3.0L FLEX FUEL VEHICLES (FFV) - RECALIBRATION

MODULE RECALIBRATION

NOTE: The affected flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) may exhibit a hard-to-start condition. The normal recalibration procedure has been modified specifically for this program. All steps of this procedure must be completed to make sure the vehicle is operating properly before returning it to the owner.
  1. Verify that the scan tool (Vehicle Communication Module [VCM] with Integrated Diagnostic System [IDS], Portable Diagnostic Software [PDS] or equivalent) is updated to software version B46.6 or later.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the vehicle. Start and run the engine while monitoring the engine coolant temperature (ECT) PID. Shut off the engine once the ECT reaches 38° C (100° F) or higher.
  3. Recalibrate the PCM to the latest level using the VCM and either the IDS or the PDS.
    • If the calibration process was successful, proceed to Authorized Modifications Label Installation instructions in this Attachment III.
    • If unable to calibrate the PCM:
      1. - module replacement will not be covered under this program, and
      2. - prior to disconnecting the scan tool and closing the session, call the Special Service Support Center at 1-800-325-5621 for further instructions.
  4. Start the engine and allow it to come to full operating temperature. Then, let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes to allow the PCM to relearn its' adaptive strategies.
NOTE: If ethanol is present in the fuel, you may experience long crank times and rough idle during the first start/run cycle after recalibration. This condition will correct itself after the engine has run approximately 10 minutes after being brought to full operating temperature.
