Air Distribution: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lincoln Aviator. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The air distribution system of this vehicle cannot be equipped with a cabin air filter.

There are two sources of air available to the air distribution system:

Recirculated air is used when the climate control mode selector is set in the AUTOMATIC and OFF modes or when manually selected in any mode except DEFROST or FLOOR/DEFROST.

Air distribution within the vehicle is controlled by the DATC system in the AUTOMATIC mode. The air distribution mode may be overridden by the driver if desired. Four independently actuated air distribution doors are used to direct airflow within the heater core and evaporator core housing and the plenum chamber (18471). Vacuum control motors (18A318) are used to position these air distribution doors.

The DATC system uses a partitioned plenum chamber, and heater core and evaporator core housing assembly with two separate temperature blend doors. This allows for individual temperature settings to be selected for the RH and LH air outlets.

The air distribution system is designed to provide airflow from the defroster duct when no vacuum is applied to any of the vacuum control motors. This is done to prevent a situation where defrost cannot be obtained due to a system vacuum leak.

Air enters the passenger compartment from the:

Passenger compartment air is exhausted from the vehicle through open windows or body air vents.
