Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer and 2006 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The PCM uses the high speed controller area network (CAN) for communication with the diagnostic tool and other modules on the high speed CAN. The PCM controls the engine for better fuel economy, emissions control, failure mode detection and storage, and engine disable for the passive anti-theft system (PATS) functions. The engine off natural vacuum (EONV) module (if equipped) is located within the PCM module.

The PCM and the instrument cluster share high speed CAN termination responsibilities with the use of a split termination resistor in each module.

Check the high speed CAN circuits between the PCM C175b and the DLC C251. The total resistance values must not be more than 5 ohms. If the resistance is more than 5 ohms, there is an open circuit in the high speed CAN, damage to the DLC C251, damage to the PCM C175b, or a problem in an in-line connector.

For additional PATS information, refer to ANTI-THEFT - PATS .

For additional EONV module information, refer to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article.
