Pinpoint Test F: DTC U2197 - Invalid Vehicle Speed Data

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when taking measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. F1 CHECK THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TCM
    • Check the recorded results from the TCM self-test.
    • Are any TCM DTCs recorded?

Yes:  REFER to INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ESCAPE & HYBRID MARINER article to continue diagnosis of the vehicle speed signal.

    No:  GO to  F2.

  2. F2 CHECK THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE
NOTE: To clear DTCs, it is necessary to cycle the ignition switch to the OFF position for 3 seconds.
    • Check the recorded results from the power steering control module self-test.
    • Are any power steering control module DTCs recorded?

Yes:  REPAIR all other power steering control module DTCs before continuing diagnosis of DTC U2197. REFER to the POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX . CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition switch to the OFF position for 3 seconds. REPEAT the self-test.

    No:  GO to  F3.

  3. F3 MONITOR THE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL PID IN THE TCM
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: TCM PID.
    • Road test the vehicle at various speeds while monitoring the vehicle speed signal PID.
    • Does the vehicle speed signal PID indicate the vehicle speed?

    Yes:  GO to  F4.

No:  REFER to INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ESCAPE & HYBRID MARINER article to continue diagnosis of the vehicle speed signal.

  4. F4 MONITOR THE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL PID IN THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Power Steering Control Module PID.
    • Road test the vehicle at various speeds while monitoring the vehicle speed signal PID.
    • Does the vehicle speed signal PID indicate the vehicle speed?

Yes:  CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition switch to the OFF position for 3 seconds. If DTC U2197 is retrieved again, GO to  F6.

If no DTCs are retrieved the system is operating correctly at this time.

    No:  GO to  F5.

  5. F5 CHECK THE CAN CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE AND THE DLC FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Power Steering Control Module C1463b.
    • Measure the resistance between power steering control module C1463b-14, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251-6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side; and between power steering control module C1463b-16, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251-14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

    Yes:  GO to  F6.

No:  REPAIR circuit(s) 1908 (WH) and/or 1909 (BK) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition switch to the OFF position for 3 seconds. REPEAT the self-test. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.

  6. F6 CHECK FOR CORRECT POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the power steering control module connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
    • Connect all power steering control module connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify that the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes:  INSTALL a new power steering control module. REFER to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition switch to the OFF position for 3 seconds. REPEAT the self-test.

No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition switch to the OFF position for 3 seconds. REPEAT the self-test.
