Steering Column: Assembly

  1. Position the shift cable bracket, the steering column harness retainer bracket and install the 2 bolts.
    • Tighten to 21 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  2. Install the clamp plate.
  3. NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the tilt lever cam mating surface, making sure to fill the grooves.
  4. Install the tilt lever.
  5. Install the tilt lever bearing.
  6. Install the tilt lever sleeve washer.
  7. Install the release lever spring.
  8. Position the bushing and pivot the support tilt bracket downward.
  9. Install the tilt lever sleeve washer.
  10. Install the tilt lever bolt washer.
  11. Install the tilt lever bolt.
  12. Install the tilt tension spring hanger.
  13. NOTE: A new nut must be installed.
  14. Install the tilt lever nut.
    • Attach a suitable pull scale with a capacity of 30 pounds to the end of the tilt lever and pull the lever into the locked position. Tighten or loosen the nut until 12-16 pounds of effort is required to lock the lever.
  15. Install the tilt tension spring.
  16. CAUTION: Make sure that the retainer is 4 mm (0.15 in) from the top of the post or damage can result.
    NOTE: A new retainer clip must be installed.

  17. Install the tilt tension spring retainer clip.
  18. NOTE: To ease the installation of the tilt tension spring, make sure that the column tilt assembly is in the upward position.
  19. Install the tilt tension spring to the support/tilt bracket and the hanger.
    • Pull downward on the tilt tension spring and route the spring over the hanger.
