Selector Lever Cable: Installation

All vehicles 

  1. Attach the draw cord to the transaxle end of the selector lever cable.
  2. Pull the selector lever cable through the floor panel.
  3. Install the selector lever cable grommet and nuts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

    NOTE: Heat exchanger shown removed.
  5. Secure the insulator material and the floor covering with adhesive tape.

  7. Install the heater housing cover.
    • Locate the 4 clips.
    • Install the 2 screws.

  9. Install the footwell heater channel.

    NOTE: LH side shown.
  11. Install the center console lower trim panels.
    • Install the clip.
    • Install the screws.

  13. Install the armrest brace.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

    NOTE: When installing the shift cable, make sure that the shift cable locking tabs are locked in place and the cable end is snapped onto the ball stud. Press the shift cable into the bracket and listen for the cable to click in place. Pull back on the shift cable to make sure that it is locked into the bracket. Also make sure that the shift cable end is correctly installed onto the ball stud. Pull back on the shift cable end to make sure that the cable end is correctly installed.
  15. Install the selector cable to the selector lever.
    1. Shift the selector lever to PARK.
    2. Clip in the selector lever cable outer sleeve.
    3. Clip in the selector lever cable.

  17. Install the floor console. For additional information, refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE article.
  18. Remove the draw cord.
  19. Unlock the shift cable end. Make sure that the cable end moves freely.

    NOTE: When installing the shift cable, make sure that the shift cable locking tabs are locked in place and the cable end is snapped onto the ball stud. Press the shift cable into the bracket and listen for the cable to click in place. Pull back on the shift cable to make sure that it is locked into the bracket. Also make sure that the shift cable end is correctly installed onto the ball stud. Pull back on the shift cable end to make sure that the cable end is correctly installed.
  21. Connect the shift cable end to the manual control lever.
    1. Connect the shift cable to the cable bracket.
    2. Connect the shift cable end to the manual control lever.

  23. Press the lock tab down to secure the cable end from moving.

  25. Install the exhaust heat shield.

  27. Connect the center exhaust hanger and remove the support wire.

    NOTE: Install a new exhaust flange gasket.
  29. Attach the exhaust pipe support insulators and connect the front exhaust pipe.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  31. Remove the support wrap.

  33. Adjust the selector lever cable. For additional information, refer to Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
  34. Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec-E (Zetec) engine 

  35. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  36. Install the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING article.
  37. Vehicles with 2.3L (PZEV) engine 

  38. Install the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  39. Check that the vehicle starts in PARK and NEUTRAL and the reverse lamps illuminate in REVERSE.
