Test Procedure
- TY1 DTC P1921: CHECK FOR THE PRESENCE OF DTC P1145 NOTE: Diagnose and repair any transmission range (TR) sensor key ON engine OFF (KOEO) and key ON engine running (KOER) self-test DTCs before entering this pinpoint test.NOTE: The transaxle control module (TCM) DTC P1921 may be set as a result of DTC P1145.
Is TCM DTC P1145 present during the self-test?
Yes No DISREGARD DTC P1921 at this time and DIAGNOSE TCM DTC P1145.
GO to PINPOINT TEST TU .GO to TY2. - TY2 KOEO AND CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTC P1921: VERIFY THAT THE CONCERN IS PRESENT NOTE: Clearing the TCM DTCs erases any TCM recorded freeze frame data. Make sure to record any TCM freeze frame information before proceeding any further. Refer to the scan tool instruction manual for freeze frame PID menu.
- Clear and retrieve the TCM continuous DTCs.
Is DTC P1921 present?
Yes No GO to TY3. GO to TY4. - TY3 CHECK THE TCM SHIFT POSITION PID
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Access the TCM and monitor the PRNDL_T (MODE) PID.
- Move the gear selector lever from PARK to REVERSE, NEUTRAL, DRIVE and LOW gears.
Does the gear selector match the PRNDL_T PID in every gear?
Yes No INSTALL a new Transaxle Assembly. REFER to the ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) GO to TY6. - TY4 RECREATE THE SYMPTOM USING ALL AVAILABLE DATA NOTE: The vehicle may need to be driven in order to recreate the original conditions that set the DTC or caused the symptom.
- Access the freeze frame data (if available) and record the DTC conditions.
- Clear the TCM DTCs.
- Obtain information from the customer information worksheet or any other available data from the customer.
- Access the TCM and monitor the PRNDL_T (MODE) PID.
- Recreate the symptom using freeze frame and customer information.
- When the symptom occurs, press trigger to begin recording. Refer to scan tool instruction manual for information on the recorder function.
Could the symptom be recreated?
Yes No GO to TY5. GO to PINPOINT TEST Z . - TY5 CHECK THE TCM SHIFT POSITION PID NOTE: Use the data recorded in the Pinpoint Test Step TY4.
Does the gear selector match the TCM PRNDL_T PID in every gear?
Yes No INSTALL a new transaxle assembly. REFER to the ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) GO to TY6. - TY6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Visually inspect for:
- pushed out pins
- corrosion
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Carry out the PCM self-test.
- Verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes No INSTALL a new PCM.
REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) .The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
