Symptom Chart - External Controls

Diagnostics in this service information assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. Refer to Diagnostic Methods in SERVICE INFORMATION for information about these practices.

In most circumstances, the PCM/TCM and BCM sets DTCs to help guide with diagnostics. Refer to the DTC CHART  before using the symptom chart. The Condition column lists the vehicle condition. The Possible Sources column lists a detailed vehicle condition. The Action column lists the action to be performed to determine the cause of the condition. Each action lists the components that can cause the system and the individual components in that system.

SYMPTOM CHART - EXTERNAL CONTROLS

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • The brake shift interlock system does not release/lock correctly
  • Body Control Module (BCM) fuse 18 (10A)
  • Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA)
  • Circuitry
  • The selector lever is out of correct gear relationship
  • Selector lever cable and bracket
  • Cable retention-to-steering column bracket
  • PRNDL display
  • The PRNDL display does not correspond to the gear
  • Selector lever cable bracket
  • TIGHTEN bolts holding selector lever cable bracket.
  • Instrument Cluster (IC) PRNDL display malfunction
  • Selector lever cable loose from the transmission bracket
  • VERIFY the selector lever cable is seated in the selector lever cable bracket.
  • Selector lever cable adjustment incorrect
  • The PRNDL indicator is always/never on
  • IC PRNDL display malfunction

  • The tow/haul switch is not operating correctly
  • BCM fuse 35 (5A)
  • Tow/haul switch
  • Tow/haul switch not cycled during self-test

  • SECURE the grommet to dash panel.

  • ADJUST the selector lever cable. TIGHTEN the selector lever cable bracket screws.
  • The selector lever will not shift from range
  • Selector lever cable disconnected
  • REINSTALL the selector lever cable.
