Pinpoint Test L: Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) Signal Failure DTCS: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The SASM  monitors steering wheel rotation speed, angle and direction of rotation and sends the information to the ABS  module over the HS-CAN  . A failure of the HS-CAN  , SASM  or the internal sensors causes the ABS  module to set one or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

DTC FAULT TRIGGER CONDITION

DTC Description Fault Trigger Conditions
C0051:28 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out of Range/Zero Adjustment Failure This DTC  sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the absolute value of the measured steering wheel angle sensor is greater than 720 degrees or if the calculated steering angle offset is greater than 15 degrees. This is most likely caused by loose or worn steering or suspension components that result in a vehicle tracking, pull or drift issue. Also, an incorrectly installed SASM  or clockspring may cause the steering angle to be offset.
U0428:00 Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module: No Sub Type Information This DTC  sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the steering angle status message sent by the SASM  indicates defective steering angle information.
U0428:2F Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module: Signal Erratic This is an intermittent DTC  that is stored only due to temporary disturbances of the signals received from the SASM  . The steering angle is measured in increments of 1 degree. This DTC  sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the steering angle sensor signal increases or decreases when it should remain stable.
U0428:61 Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module: Signal Calculation Failure This DTC  sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the calculated steering angle and the actual steering angle differ by more than 15 degrees. This is most likely caused by an incorrectly installed or damaged SASM  but can also be caused by loose or worn steering or suspension components that result in excessive play in the steering system.
U0428:62 Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module: Signal Compare Failure These Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) set in continuous memory and on-demand if the steering angle sensor signal does not match other stability sensor signals (yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, etc.).
U0428:64 Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module: Signal Plausibility Failure
U0428:68 Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module: Event Information
