Symptom Chart Climate Control Systems

NOTE: Some PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may inhibit A/C operation. If any PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are retrieved, diagnose those first. Refer to the DTC Chart: PCM in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Charts .

Diagnostics in this service information assume A/Certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods

Symptom Chart

Condition Possible Sources Actions
A module does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool Fuse
Wiring, terminals or connectors
HVAC control module
REFER to: Communications Network
Insufficient Air Conditioning (A/C) cooling Improper refrigerant level CARRY OUT the refrigerant system tests. REFER to: Refrigerant System Tests
Temperature door actuator For inadequate temperature out of the LH side, GO to Pinpoint Test N
For inadequate temperature out of the RH side, GO to Pinpoint Test G
The A/C is always on - A/C mode always commanded on Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test M
The A/C is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test L
The A/C pressure relief valve is discharging High system pressure
A/C pressure relief valve
Using the R-134a manifold gauge set, CHECK the A/C system pressure. If the system pressure is above the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, REPAIR the system for a restriction.
CHECK the high side system pressure. If the pressure is below the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, INSTALL a new A/C compressor. REFER to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 1.6L EcoBoost (132kW/180PS) - Sigma  REFER to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS)
The air inlet door is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test I
The front blower motor is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test O
The front blower motor does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test P
The rear blower motor is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test X
The rear blower motor does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test Y
The front electric booster heater is inoperative or does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test A
The rear electric booster heater is inoperative or does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test W
The RHVAC system is inoperative or rear A/C not operating correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test AA
Incorrect or erratic direction of airflow from outlets Refer to the Pinpoint Test For front HVAC air flow concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test J
For RHVAC air flow concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test Z
Insufficient, erratic or no heat Refer to the Pinpoint Test For engine coolant/heater core related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test K
For front electric booster heater related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test A
For rear electric booster heater related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test W
Reduced outlet airflow Plugged pollen filter Inspect the pollen filter. REFER to: Pollen Filter - LHD FWD  If OK, DIAGNOSE for low refrigerant charge, AC always commanded on or blower motor not operating correctly.
Improper refrigerant level CARRY OUT the refrigerant system tests. REFER to: Refrigerant System Tests  If refrigerant charge is OK, GO to Pinpoint Test M
Blower motor GO to Pinpoint Test P
The temperature control is inoperative or does not operate correctly - driver side Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test N
The temperature control is inoperative or does not operate correctly - passenger side Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test G
The temperature display does not switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit HVAC control module INSTALL a new HVAC control module to correct the failure to retain configuration data. REFER to: Climate Control Assembly
The temperature setpoint does not repeat after setting the ignition to OFF HVAC control module INSTALL a new HVAC control module. REFER to: Climate Control Assembly
Unable to duplicate the customer concern and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test H
