Symptom Chart - Climate Control Systems
NOTE:
Some PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may inhibit A/C operation. If any PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are retrieved, diagnose those first. Refer to the DTC Chart: PCM. REFER to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Charts
Diagnostics in this service information assume A/Certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods
Symptom Chart
| Condition | Possible Sources | Actions |
|---|---|---|
| A module does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool | Fuse Wiring, terminals or connectors |
REFER to: Communications Network |
| Insufficient Air Conditioning (A/C) cooling | Improper refrigerant level | CARRY OUT the refrigerant system tests. REFER to: Refrigerant System Tests If OK, DIAGNOSE for a temperature door actuator not operating correctly. |
| Temperature door actuator | GO to Pinpoint Test L | |
| The A/C is always on - A/C mode always commanded on | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test K |
| The A/C is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test J |
| The A/C pressure relief valve is discharging | High system pressure A/C pressure relief valve |
Using the R-134a manifold gauge set, CHECK the A/C system pressure. If the system pressure is above the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, REPAIR the system for a restriction. CHECK the high side system pressure. If the pressure is below the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, INSTALL a new A/C compressor. | The air inlet door is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test G |
| The front blower motor is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test M |
| The front blower motor does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test N |
| The rear blower motor is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test S |
| The rear blower motor does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test T |
| The front electric booster heater is inoperative or does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test A |
| The rear electric booster heater is inoperative or does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test R |
| The RHVAC system is inoperative or rear A/C not operating correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test V |
| Incorrect or erratic direction of airflow from outlets | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | For front HVAC air flow concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test H For RHVAC air flow concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test U |
| Insufficient, erratic or no heat | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | For engine coolant/heater core related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test I For front electric booster heater related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test A For rear electric booster heater related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test R |
| Reduced outlet airflow | Plugged pollen filter | INSPECT the pollen filter. REFER to: Pollen Filter - LHD FWD If OK, DIAGNOSE for low refrigerant charge, AC always commanded on or blower motor not operating correctly. |
| Improper refrigerant level | CARRY OUT the refrigerant system tests. REFER to: Refrigerant System Tests If refrigerant charge is OK, GO to Pinpoint Test K | |
| Blower motor | GO to Pinpoint Test N | |
| The temperature control is inoperative or does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test L |
| The temperature display does not switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit | HVAC control module | INSTALL a new HVAC control module to correct the failure to retain configuration data. REFER to: Climate Control Assembly |
| The temperature setpoint does not repeat after setting the ignition to OFF | HVAC control module | INSTALL a new HVAC control module. REFER to: Climate Control Assembly |
| Unable to duplicate the customer concern and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test F |
