Terrain Management System
The Terrain Management System optimizes driveability and comfort as well as maximizing traction while operating on different types of terrain. The terrain management system automatically tailors your vehicle configuration for each mode selected. This is accomplished by changing the functionality of the following systems.
- Electronically power-assisted steering system adjusts steering effort and feel based on your selected mode.
- Electronic stability control and traction control help maintain vehicle control in adverse conditions or high performance driving.
- Electronic throttle control enhances the powertrain response to driver inputs.
- Transmission controls are optimized with shift schedules tuned to each terrain.
- Transfer case; automatically engages specific 4WD modes depending on the selected terrain mode.
- ELD engages automatically during certain terrain modes.
The Terrain Management System uses several messages displayed in the message center to inform the driver of current operational status:
- Electronically power-assisted steering system adjusts steering effort and feel based on your selected mode.
- SELECTED 4X4 MODE NOT AVAILABLE IN CURRENT TERRAIN MODE
- LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL NOT AVAILABLE IN CURRENT TERRAIN MODE
- TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT
- SELECTED TERRAIN MODE PRECONDITIONS NOT MET
It is recommended that terrain management modes that enable the ELD (electronic locking differential) 4H, or 4L modes not be used on dry, hard surfaced roads. Doing so will produce excessive noise, vibration and increase tire wear.
