Cooling Module: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting .

  1. 2.

    Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding .

  1. 3.

    Recover the A/C system refrigerant. For additional information, refer to Climate Control System General Information .

  1. 4.

    Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables .

  1. 5.

    Remove the RH and LH headlamp assemblies. For additional information, refer to Exterior Lighting .

  1. 6.

    Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to Bumpers .

  1. 7.

    Release the tabs and open the Battery Junction Box (BJB) cover.

  1. 8.

    Remove nut and disconnect the power cable terminals.

    Release the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose.

  1. 10.

    Detach the electrical connector retainer and the wiring harness retainer from the top RH side of the cooling fan motor and shroud.

  1. 11.

    Detach the wiring harness retainer from the LH side of the cooling fan motor and shroud.

  1. 12.

    Detach the wiring harness retainers from the RH side of the cooling fan motor and shroud.

  1. 13.

    Disconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connectors and detach the wiring harness retainers from the cooling fan shroud.

  1. 14.

    Release the BJB retaining tabs and detach the BJB from the bracket. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the LH side of the cooling fan motor and shroud. Position the BJB and the wiring harness aside.

  1. 15.

    Release the clamp and disconnect the radiator overflow hose.

  1. 16.

    Remove the spring clip and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.

    NOTE: Navigator shown Expedition similar.

    Remove the hood latch assembly bolts, cable retainer, and position the hood latch assembly aside.

    Disconnect the horn assembly electrical connector.

    Remove the pin-type retainers and the LH air deflector.

    Remove the pin-type retainers and the RH air deflector.

Vehicles without an auxiliary transmission cooler 

  1. 21.

    Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler hoses from the radiator and remove the transmission cooler tube pin-type retainer.

Vehicles with an auxiliary transmission cooler 

  1. 22.

    Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler hoses from the auxiliary transmission cooler and the radiator.

All vehicles 

  1. 23.

    Remove the condenser inlet fitting bolt, the condenser outlet fitting nut and disconnect the fittings.
    • Discard the O-ring and gasket seals.

  1. 24.

    Disconnect the ambient air temperature sensor electrical connector and harness retainer.

  1. 25.

    Remove the cooling module bolts and remove the cooling module from the vehicle.
