Pinpoint Test L : SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) Signal Failure Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCS): Notes

NOTE: The SASM is also known as the steering wheel rotation sensor.

The SASM monitors steering wheel rotation speed, angle and direction of rotation and sends the information to the ABS module over the HS-CAN. A failure of the HS-CAN, SASM or the internal sensors causes the ABS module to set one or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

DTC Description Fault Trigger Conditions
C0051:28 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out of Range / Zero Adjustment Failure This DTC sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the calculated steering angle offset is greater than 15 degrees. This is most likely caused by loose or worn steering or suspension components that result in a vehicle tracking or pull-drift issue. Also, an incorrectly installed SASM or clockspring may cause the steering angle to be offset.
C0051:61 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Calculation Failure This DTC sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the steering angle status message "Not Initialized" while the vehicle speed exceeds 15 km/h (9 mph) or if the SASM status message changes from "Initialized" to "Not Initialized". This is most likely caused by an interruption of the voltage supply to the angle sensor or an internal fault of the SASM.
C0051:62 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Compare Failure This DTC sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the difference between the steering wheel angle signal and the calculated reference signal is too high. This is most likely caused by a vehicle alignment concern or an internal failure of the SASM.
C0051:64 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Plausibility Failure This DTC sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the difference between the steering wheel angle signal and the calculated reference signal is too high or if the steering wheel angle sensor does not match other stability control sensor inputs. This is most likely caused by a vehicle alignment concern or an internal failure of the SASM.
C0051:85 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Above Allowable Range This DTC sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the absolute value of the calculated steering wheel angle is greater than a predetermined threshold. This is most likely caused by an incorrectly installed SASM, vehicle alignment concerns or an internal failure of the SASM.
C0051:96 Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Component Internal Failure This DTC sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the steering angle status message "Defective" is received by the ABS module or the status message changes from "Normal Operation" to "Not Initialized". This is most likely caused by an interruption of the voltage supply to the angle sensor, the loss of initialization by the angle sensor or an internal fault of the SASM.
