Symptom Chart - Climate Control Systems
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .
NOTE:
Some PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may inhibit A/C operation. If any PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are retrieved, diagnose those first. Refer to DTC Chart: PCM .
| Condition | Possible Sources | Actions |
|---|---|---|
| A module does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool | Fuse Wiring, terminals or connectors HVAC control module |
REFER to: Communications Network . |
| Externally Controlled Variable Displacement Compressor (EVDC) poor performance/does not operate correctly | Refer to Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test D |
| Insufficient Air Conditioning (A/C) cooling | Improper refrigerant level | CARRY OUT the refrigerant system tests. REFER to: Refrigerant System Tests . |
| Temperature door actuator | For inadequate temperature out of the driver side, GO to Pinpoint Test N For inadequate temperature out of the passenger side, GO to Pinpoint Test G |
|
| The A/C is always on - A/C mode always commanded on | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test M |
| The A/C is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test L |
| The A/C pressure relief valve is discharging | High system pressure A/C pressure relief valve |
Using the manifold gauge set, CHECK the A/C system pressure. If the system pressure is above the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, REPAIR the system for a restriction. CHECK the high side system pressure. If the pressure is below the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, INSTALL a new A/C compressor. REFER to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 1.5L EcoBoost (132kW/180PS) - I4 . REFER to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 2.0L EcoBoost (177kW/240PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) . |
| The air inlet door is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test I |
| The blower motor is inoperative | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test O |
| The blower motor does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test P |
| The electric booster heater is inoperative or does not operate correctly | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test A |
| Incorrect or erratic direction of airflow from outlets | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test J |
| Insufficient, erratic or no heat | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test K |
| Reduced outlet airflow | Plugged cabin air filter | Inspect the cabin air filter. REFER to: Cabin Air Filter . If OK, DIAGNOSE for low refrigerant charge, AC always commanded on or blower motor not operating correctly. |
| Improper refrigerant level | CARRY OUT the refrigerant system tests. REFER to: Refrigerant System Tests . If refrigerant charge is OK, GO to Pinpoint Test M | |
| Blower motor | GO to Pinpoint Test P | |
| The temperature control is inoperative or does not operate correctly - driver side | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test N |
| The temperature control is inoperative or does not operate correctly - passenger side | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test G |
| The temperature display does not switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit | Module communications network IPC information display settings HVAC control module |
VERIFY temperature is properly set in IPC information display setting: Display >Temperature>select your setting. REFER to the Owner's Literature for more information. VERIFY module communications network operation. DIAGNOSE Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if present in BCM, IPC or HVAC control module. |
| The temperature setpoint does not repeat after setting the ignition to OFF | HVAC control module | INSTALL a new HVAC control module. REFER to: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Control Module . |
| Unable to duplicate the customer concern and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present | Refer to the Pinpoint Test | GO to Pinpoint Test H |
| Climate control does not operate only when remote start is used | IPC information display settings Non-Ford approved remote start system installed |
VERIFY Remote Start - Message Center Set To Auto, or Remote Start - Message Center Set To Last User Settings. REFER to: Climate Control System - Vehicles With: Dual Automatic Temperature Control (DATC) - System Operation and Component Description . VERIFY module communications network operation. DIAGNOSE Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if present. |
