Gateway Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Lincoln Nautilus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The GWM communicates with the 5 Controller Area Networks (CANs). The OBD remote DLC is connected to the GWM and is the interface with the diagnostic scan tool.

For diagnostic scan tool access, a remote DLC is mounted under the driver side instrument panel with a harness connected to the GWM. The GWM acts as a central gateway to translate messages across all 5 vehicle Controller Area Networks (CANs). The GWM is the only module on the vehicle with this ability. The GWM also serves as a termination module for each of the networks to which it is connected.

The 2 module communication networks connected to the remote DLC are DIAG1 and DIAG2. These 2 networks communicate with the diagnostic scan tool. The other 5 communication networks do not communicate directly with the diagnostic scan tool. The GWM translates the messages from the HS-CAN1 to DIAG1. The GWM translates messages from the HS-CAN2, HS-CAN3, HS-CAN4 and MS-CAN to the DIAG2 which transfers the signals to the diagnostic scan tool.
