Axle Assembly: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. NOTE: Make sure that the surface is clean and free of foreign material.

    Clean and inspect the O-ring mating surface.

  2. NOTE: Make sure that a new O-ring seal is installed.

    Install a new O-ring.

  3. NOTE: Make sure that the mating surface and the bore is free of corrosion and foreign material, avoid particles getting into the bore.

    Clean and inspect the engine oil pan at front axle assembly mating surface.

  4. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Clean the debris or contamination of the splines, circlip groove and the surface near the O-ring groove.

  5. NOTE: Make sure that new components are installed.

    1. NOTE: Make sure that the O-ring is seated correctly.

      Install a new front axle pinion stem O-ring.

    2. NOTE: The circlip must be side-loaded on to the front axle pinion stem to prevent deformation of the circlip.
      NOTE: Make sure that the circlip is seated correctly.

      Install the new front axle pinion stem circlip.

  6. NOTE: The circlip must be side-loaded on to the front axle pinion stem to prevent deformation of the circlip.

    Lubricate the front driveshaft plug-on yoke splines with grease.

    Material: Slip Yoke Grease / 5L3Z-19A506-A

  7. NOTE: Maintain the suitable possible distance between components.

    Ensure the distance between the edge of plug-on yoke and the front axle pinion nut.

  8. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    1. Position the front axle and driveshaft as an assembly on vehicle.
    2. Push the front axle and driveshaft as assembly in transfer case.
    3. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.

      Install the new front axle assembly bolts.

      Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  9. Attach the front axle breather hose and the tie strap.

  10. Connect the front drive axle speed sensor electrical connector and position the wiring harness with proper routing.

  11. Install the heat shield and fasteners.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  12. Install catalytic converter RH. Refer to: Catalytic Converter 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS) . Refer to: Catalytic Converter RH 3.0L EcoBoost . Refer to: Catalytic Converter RH 3.3L Duratec-V6 . Refer to: Catalytic Converter RH 3.3L Duratec-V6 - Hybrid (BP) .
  13. Install the engine mount RH. Refer to: Engine Mount RH 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS) . Refer to: Engine Mount RH 3.0L EcoBoost . Refer to: Engine Mount RH 3.3L Duratec-V6 . Refer to: Engine Mount RH 3.3L Duratec-V6 - Hybrid (BP) .
  14. Install the front RH halfshaft. Refer to: Halfshaft .
  15. Fill the front differential with clean fluid. Refer to: Differential Draining and Filling  .
