Module Configuration - Overview
Overview
Over the Air (OTA) Programming
Over the air module updates are released from the Ford cloud and are received by the vehicle TCU over the vehicle cellular and WiFi connection. The TCU transfers the data to the GWM where it is distributed to the modules requiring the update. The over the air (OTA) updates are communicated between the GWM and the receiving modules through the Ethernet network, for modules with an Ethernet connection and the vehicle Controller Area Networks, for all other modules. There are 2 general types of update; Scheduled updates and Non Scheduled updates. The type of over the air (OTA) update required is determined by the type of update being released and the configuration of the module(s) being updated.
Additionally, there are a number of over the air (OTA) update sub types as described below.
- Simple: These are update releases that generally affect a single module.
- Coordinated: These are update releases that affect a number of modules and each module needs to be updated in a specific order.
Conditions must be met for all over the air (OTA) updates to complete. Listed below are some conditions that must be met for an OTA update to complete.
- Battery state of charge
- The vehicle is stopped
- The vehicle is parked
- The hazard indicators are off
- The alarm is not sounding
- All doors and liftgate are closed
- The parking lights are off
- The brake pedal is not pressed
Details of the over the air (OTA) update release status can be can be viewed on the PTS Connected Vehicle tab.
Scheduled Updates
For some downloads the module data is erased before the new data can be uploaded. These updates need to be scheduled as the vehicle is disabled (INHIBITED) for up to 40 minutes while the update takes place. When software updates are available, the vehicle is informed and the download begins in the background. Once the download has completed, a schedule installation update pop up will appear for the user to schedule a time for the installation to take place. Once scheduled, the user is informed the installation is taking place and the vehicle is disabled while the update installation takes place. On the next use of the vehicle, details of the update can be viewed on the vehicle touchscreen.
Certain conditions must be met for a scheduled update installation to complete. If these conditions are not met, the update is cancelled. Cancelled updates can be rescheduled for a time when the conditions can be met.
Non Scheduled Updates
Modules with a configuration that does not require the module data to be erased before new data is applied, can be updated at any time, when preconditions are met. The user is offered an automatic or Manual update option for this type of update. The vehicle owner has the choice to disable the automatic update option and manually choose the time the update takes place. Manual updates can be initiated by selecting the update icon. Once an update completes and an ignition key cycle occurs, the user is informed of the successful completion of the update and can access details of the completed update.
