Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

  1. OB1: CHECK FOR OTHER ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE DTCS (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) 
    NOTE: To access the ABS ECU Reset routine when using Ford IDS, go to Chassis, then Braking and click ABS ECU Reset.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS ECU Reset routine.
    • Are any battery voltage or lost communication DTCs present in the ABS module? 
      Yes No
      DIANOSE all ABS  module battery voltage and lost communication DTCs  before diagnosing the selectable drive mode switch. GO to the ABS  module DTC  Chart. Go to  OB2.
  2. OB2: DETERMINE SELECTABLE DRIVE MODE CAPABILITY 
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, Press the Read Vehicle Information button to view the results ofthe modules communicating on the network.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve DTC s from the vehicle. NOTE: DTC s may be displayedfrom previous diagnostic actions.
    • Is the vehicle equipped with an ATCM? 
      Yes No
      Go to  OB8. Go to  OB3
  3. OB3: VERIFY THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) COMMUNICATES ON THE NETWORK 
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, Press the Read Vehicle Information button to view the results ofthe modules communicating on the network.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve DTC s from the vehicle. NOTE: DTC s may be displayedfrom previous diagnostic actions.

    Does the PCM pass the Network Test? 

    Yes No
    Go to  OB4. Diagnose the PCM does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool. REFER to COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
  4. OB4: CHECK FOR PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) DTCS (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) 
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the PCM KOEO  self-test.

    Are any DTCs present in the PCM? 

    Yes No
    DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs before diagnosing the selectable drive mode switch. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS 2.7L
    Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L
    Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.3L
    Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.5L
    Go to  OB5.
  5. OB5 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE TOW-HAUL/OVERDRIVE SWITCH 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect Floor Shifter (if equipped) C3245
    • Disconnect Column Shifter (if equipped) C2135
    • Ignition ON.
    • For vehicles equipped with Column Shifter, measure:
      Positive Lead  Measurement / Action  Negative Lead 
      C2135 Pin 1 Ground Pin -
    • For vehicles equipped with Floor Shifter, measure:
      Positive Lead  Measurement / Action  Negative Lead 
      C3245 Pin 1 Ground Pin -

    Is the voltage above 11 volts? 

    Yes No
    GO to  OB6 REPAIR the circuit.VERIFY BCM fuse 18 (7.5A) is OK.If the fuse is OK, REPAIR
    the circuit.If the fuse is not OK, Refer to CONNECTOR REPAIR PROCEDURES
  6. OB6: CHECK THE TOW-HAUL/OVERDRIVE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  OB7 REPAIR the circuit.
  7. OB7: CHECK THE TOW-HAUL/OVERDRIVE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • For vehicles equipped with a column shifter, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C2135 Pin 2 Ω Ground Pin -
    • For vehicles equipped with a floor shifter, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C3245 Pin 5 Ω Ground Pin -

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes No
    CHECK OASIS for any service articles: TSB , GSB , SSM or FSA .
    If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOWthe service article instructions.
    If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new floor or column shifterassembly, the tow-haul switch is part of the shifter assembly.
    REFER to: SELECTOR LEVER ASSEMBLY - VEHICLES WITH: COLUMN SHIFT
    REFER to: SELECTOR LEVER ASSEMBLY - VEHICLES WITH: FLOOR SHIFT
    REPAIR the circuit.
  8. OB8: CHECK THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) 
    • Disconnect the diagnostic tool.

    Is DTC U0138:xx or U0439:xx present in the ABS module? 

    Yes No
    GO to Pinpoint Tests BM  GO to  OB9
  9. OB9: CHECK FOR ATCM (ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE) DTCS (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) 
    • Disconnect the diagnostic tool.

    Are any DTCs present in the ATCM? 

    Yes No
    If the ATCM does not communicate with the diagnostic scan tool, REFER to COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
    If the ATCM communicates with the diagnostic scan tool, DIAGNOSE all ATCM DTCs before diagnosing the selectable drive mode switch. REFER to FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS - VEHICLES WITH: 2-SPEED TORQUE ON DEMAND TRANSFER CASE , FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS - RAPTOR, VEHICLES WITH: 4HI-LOC TORQUE ON DEMAND TRANSFER CASE , FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS - VEHICLES WITH: ELECTRONIC SHIFT TRANSFER CASE
    Go to  OB10.
  10. OB10: CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE ATCM (ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE) 
    • Disconnect ATCM C2071
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C2071 Pin 1 Ground Pin-
    • Disconnect the diagnostic tool.

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes No
    Go to  OB11. VERIFY all ATCM related fuses in the BJB are OK.
    REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS .
    If the fuses are not OK, REFER to OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS to locate the cause of the circuit short.
  11. OB11: CHECK THE ATCM (ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C2071 Pin 7 Ω Ground Pin -

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB , GSB , SSM or FSA . If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions.
    If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a ATCM , part of the MSS.
    Refer to MODE SELECT SWITCH (MSS) .
    No REPAIR the circuit.
