Axle Assembly: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2022 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    If removed.

    • Place the axle assembly on the work bench.

    • NOTE: The component should be reused unless damaged or has excessive wear.

      Position the front axle carrier mounting bracket on the axle assembly.

    • Install the new bolts.

      Torque: Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) Stage 2: 70deg.

  2. Using the transmission jack, position the front axle assembly. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  3. NOTE: Make sure that new bolt and nuts are installed.
    NOTE: Only tighten bolt and nuts finger tight at this stage.

    1. Fit the axle support bracket cover to the front axle mounting bracket.
    2. Install the new axle support bracket cover-to-the front axle mounting bracket nuts.
    3. Install and hand tighten the new front axle cover mounting bolt.

  4. NOTE: Make sure that new bolt is installed.
    NOTE: Only tighten bolt finger tight at this stage.

    1. Install the front axle tube bushing support bracket.
    2. Install the new bolt and lower the transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  5. NOTE: Only tighten nut and bolt finger tight at this stage.

    Install the upper mounting bracket-to-frame nut and bolt.

  6. If equipped.

    1. Tighten the front axle cover bushing bolt.

      Torque: 195 lb.ft (265 Nm)

    2. Tighten the front axle cover mounting support bracket nuts.

      Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

    3. Tighten the front axle tube bushing support bracket bolt.

      Torque: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

    4. Tighten the front axle carrier upper mounting bolt and the nut.

      Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

    1. Install the bolt and the oil filter shield.

      Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    2. Install the new rivet-type push pin.

  7. Install the LH fender splash shield and the pin-type retainers.

  8. Attach the hose to the metal breather tube.

  9. Install the front halfshafts. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH . Refer to: Front Halfshaft RH .
  10. Install the front driveshaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .
  11. Check the front differential fluid level. Refer to: Differential Fluid Level Check .
  12. If equipped. Install the front axle skid plate and the bolts.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  13. If equipped. Install the engine front undershield and the bolts.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  14. If equipped. Install the engine undershield and the bolts.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
