Pinpoint Test Z: Abs (Anti-Lock Brake System) Module Configuration Concerns

  1. Refer to Vehicle Dynamic Systems for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    During new module installation, configuration files are loaded into the new module being replaced. If a discrepancy is detected between the modules or an incomplete programming procedure is carried out, a DTC is set.

    REFER to: Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Stability Control - Diesel/Flex Fuel - Ethanol/Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FHEV)/Gasoline - System Operation and Component Description .

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    ABS C052B:93 ABS Pump Motor Control Range/Performance: No Operation Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS C102E:48 Stability Control System: Supervision Software Failure Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS P0604:8F Internal Control Module Random Access Memory (RAM) Error: Erratic Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS U2002:47 Switch: Watchdog/Safety μC Failure Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS U2017:57 Control Module Software #2: Invalid/Incompatible Software Component Sets if the RSC calibration variant and the ABS module configuration do not match.
    ABS U2017:93 Control Module Software #2: No Operation This DTC sets if the RSC control logic cannot initialize after stable driving conditions are detected. This is usually due to an incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS U2018:57 Control Module Software #3: Invalid/Incompatible Software Component Sets if the selectable drive mode software and the ABS module configuration do not match.
    ABS U202B:61 In-Use Application Signing Key: Signal Calculation Failure Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures. Detects a non-production bootloader file is present or an ABS module with production boot is unlocked
    ABS U202B:62 In-Use Application Signing Key: Signal Compare Failure Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures. Detects non-production software in the ABS module.
    ABS U2100:00 Initial Configuration Not Complete: No Sub Type Information Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS U2101:00 Control Module Configuration Incompatible: No Sub Type Information Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    ABS U2200:00 Control Module Configuration Memory Corrupt: No Sub Type Information This DTC also sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    SASM U2016:47 Control Module Main Software: Watchdog/Safety μC Failure Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    SASM U2100:00 Initial Configuration Not Complete: No Sub Type Information Sets due to incomplete or improper module programming procedures.
    SASM U2101:00 Control Module Configuration Incompatible: No Sub Type Information Sets when the SASM receives invalid vehicle configuration data from the BCM.
    SASM U2200:00 Control Module Configuration Memory Corrupt: No Sub Type Information Sets when the checksum sent with the vehicle configuration message from the BCM does not match the checksum stored in the SASM memory.

    Possible Causes 

    • Incomplete programming procedure
    • Improper programming procedure
    • ABS module
    • SASM

  2. Z1 CHECK THE SERVICE HISTORY

    • Check the service history for recent service actions related to the ABS module, SASM /Clockspring, or BCM.

    Have there been any recent service actions with the ABS module, SASM /Clockspring, or BCM ' 

    Yes  For recent BCM service actions, GO to  Z5 For recent SASM /Clockspring service actions, GO to  Z7For recent ABS module service actions, GO to  Z6
    No  For ABS module concerns, GO to  Z2 For SASM /Clockspring concerns, GO to  Z3 For all others, GO to  Z4
  3. Z2 CHECK FOR ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE COMMUNICATION DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) S

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.
      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.
      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.
      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS module self-test.

    Are any lost communication or invalid data DTC s present? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE these DTC s first. REFER to the DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART
    No  GO to  Z4
  4. Z3 CHECK FOR SASM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE) COMMUNICATION DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) S

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the SASM self-test.

    Are any lost communication or invalid data DTC s present? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE these DTC s first. REFER to the DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART
    No  GO to  Z7
  5. Z4 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) COMMUNICATIONS

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the BCM self-test.

    Does the diagnostic scan tool communicate with the BCM and retrieve any DTC s? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE all BCMDTC s before continuing with this pinpoint test. REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) . If the scan tool can communicate with the BCM but there are no DTC s present, GO to  Z5
    No  If the scan tool cannot communicate with the BCM, REFER to: Controller Area Network (CAN) Module Communications Network - Electric .
  6. Z5 CONFIGURE THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Carry out the BCM programming procedure as directed by the diagnostic scan tool. For additional information, REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.
      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.
      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.
      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the ABS DTC s.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS self-test.

    Is the original DTC currently present and active? 

    Yes  GO to  Z8
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by an incomplete or improper programming session.
  7. Z6 CONFIGURE THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE USING PMI (PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Carry out the ABS configuration routine as directed by the diagnostic scan tool. For additional information, REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.
      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.
      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.
      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the ABS DTC s.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS self-test.

    Is the original DTC currently present and active? 

    Yes  GO to  Z8
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by an incomplete or improper programming session.
  8. Z7 CONFIGURE THE SASM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Carry out the SASM programming procedure as directed by the diagnostic scan tool. For additional information, REFER to: Module Programming .

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.
      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.
      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.
      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the SASM DTC s.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the SASM self-test.

    Is the original DTC currently present and active? 

    Yes  GO to  Z8
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by an incomplete or improper programming session.
  9. Z8 INITIALIZE THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS calibration routine. Follow all diagnostic scan tool directions.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the ABSDTC s.

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.
      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.
      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.
      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the SASM self-test.

    Is the original DTC currently present and active? 

    Yes  GO to  Z10
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by an incomplete or improper programming session.
  10. Z9 CHECK FOR CORRECT SASM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE) MODULE OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Using a good light source, inspect the electrical connector for the following:

      • Corrosion - INSTALL new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • Damaged or bent pins - INSTALL new terminals or pins
      • Pushed-out pins - INSTALL new pins as necessary
      • Spread terminals - INSTALL new terminals as necessary

    • Connect SASM connector C2414A. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new SASM. REFER to: Clockspring - Vehicles Without: Adaptive Steering . REFER to: Clockspring - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by an incomplete or improper programming session.
  11. Z10 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect ABS module C135.

    • Using a good light source, inspect the electrical connector for the following:

      • Corrosion - INSTALL new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • Damaged or bent pins - INSTALL new terminals or pins
      • Pushed-out pins - INSTALL new pins as necessary
      • Spread terminals - INSTALL new terminals as necessary

    • Connect ABS module C135. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  The HCU and ABS module are a single assembly known as the EBB unit. CHECK OASIS for any service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new EBB module. REFER to: Electric Brake Booster (EBB) .
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by an incomplete or improper programming session.
