Transfer case clutch actuator
The transfer case uses a brushless reversible DC motor (transfer case clutch actuator) to provide torque to the transfer case clutch mechanism, when commanded. The motor is commanded by the AWD module and is used to actuate the multi-plate clutch pack within the transfer case assembly.
The transfer case clutch kiss point is the maximum motor position (measured in degrees) where the clutch will transfer 0 torque to the front driveshaft. The AWD module stores the kiss point position in Keep Alive Memory (KAM). Each time the AWD module wakes up, the module verifies the kiss point position. If the new position is different from the stored position, the AWD module will make a small adjustment (approximately 0.25 degrees or less) to the stored kiss point position value.
The AWD module will initiate a rapid kiss point learn routine when there is no stored kiss point position value in KAM.
The clutch kiss point must be fully learned when a new transfer case is installed.
