Fuel Tank Draining
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Bonneville, 2003 Buick Park Avenue, and 2003 Buick LeSabre. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Drain the fuel tank to at least 3/4 of a tank before removing the fuel sender retaining ring or fuel sender access panel in order to avoid possible fuel spillage. Failing to follow this procedure could result in personal injury. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.
CAUTION:
Drain the fuel tank with a hose which has a 0.5" (13 mm) or smaller diameter in order to prevent the drain hose from getting stuck inside the fuel tank filler neck pipe check valve. Damage to the check valve may result.
Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the fuel tank filler pipe cap. Use a hand-operated fuel pump device in order to drain the fuel through the fuel tank filler pipe. Install the fuel tank filler pipe cap. Connect the negative battery cable.
