Code 17 - Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS Circuit
- Turn ignition OFF. Remove Clock fuse in the under-hood relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECU. Road test vehicle and operate the cruise control. If the cruise control does not set, check for continuity to body ground on BLK wire between the gauge assy. A1 and GND-12. If Cruise control sets, continue with following step.
- With transmission in 2nd gear, accelerate to 4000 RPM and decelerate to 1000 RPM with throttle fully closed. Verify if "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on and if LED indicates Code 17. If not, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at VSS connector.
- Turn ignition OFF. Connect PGM-FI test harness between the ECU and connector. Disconnect B connector form the main wire harness only, not the ECU. Turn ignition ON. Measure voltage between B18(pos.) and A18(neg.). If reading is not approximately 5 Volts, substitute a good ECU and recheck. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, replace ECU. If Reading is approximately 5 Volts continue with next step.
- Turn ignition OFF. Reconnect B connector. Block rear wheels and set parking brake. Raise front of vehicle and support with safety stands. Slowly rotate left front wheel and measure voltage between ECU terminals B18 (pos.) and A18 (neg.). See Figure . If voltage does not pulse, check for open or short in Yellow wire between ECU terminal B18 (pos.) and VSS. If wire is okay, replace VSS. If voltage pulses between 0 and 5 volts, substitute a known good ECU and recheck. If condition is rectified, replace original ECU.
