Ignition Timing

  1. Start engine and run under no-load condition at about 3000 RPM until cooling fan comes on. Let engine slow to idle. Pull out service check connector (2-pin), located behind the glove box. See Fig 1 . Plug SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100 ) into service check connector.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  attempt any connection to 3-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) located near service check connector.
  2. Check idle speed and adjust as necessary. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  table. Connect a timing light to spark plug wire No. 1. Check base ignition timing with timing light. Timing marks are located on timing belt cover and accessory drive belt pulley. Red mark indicates 15 degrees BTDC. White mark indicates TDC. See Fig 2 . See IGNITION TIMING  table.

  3. Loosen hold-down bolts and rotate distributor to adjust timing. Tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 N.m). Recheck timing to ensure it hasn't changed.
  4. Remove timing light. Remove SCS service connector from ignition timing service check connector.
