General System Description:

PURPOSE
The computerized engine controls on this vehicle are designed to provide maximum performance in balance with low emissions and high fuel economy.

OPERATION
The Programmed Fuel Injection system (PGM-FI) is a sequential multiport fuel injection system using speed-density calculations. This system uses sensor inputs to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to control engine fuel injector timing and duration, fuel pumping, idle speed, and spark timing. In addition, on automatic transmission equipped vehicles the transmission control functions are controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) which uses the engine control information to determine shift timing and torque converter clutch lock-up.
