Overrunning Clutch Test

NOTE: If starter drive gear teeth are damaged, check condition of flywheel or torque converter ring gear.
  1. Slide overrunning clutch along shaft. If overrunning clutch slides smoothly along shaft, go to next step. If overrunning clutch does not slide smoothly along shaft, replace overrunning clutch.
  2. Rotate overrunning clutch on shaft. See Fig 1. Overrunning clutch should lock when rotated in one direction and rotate smoothly when rotated in the other direction. If overrunning clutch does not perform as specified, replace overrunning clutch. If overrunning clutch performs as specified, go to next step.
  3. Inspect starter drive gear for wear or damage. If gear is damaged, replace overrunning clutch. Drive gear is not available separately.
