DTC P1009: Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) Advance Malfunction
General Description
The variable valve timing control (VTC) system controls the phase of the intake camshaft. It uses oil pressure to operate the VTC actuator so the valve timing is optimized depending on driving conditions. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the phase control command and the actual timing of the camshaft by using camshaft position (CMP) sensor. If an over-advanced camshaft phase (compared to the directed value) continues or when the camshaft phase is otherwise abnormal, a malfunction is detected and a DTC is stored.
Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type, OBD Status
| Execution | Continuous |
| Sequence | None |
| Duration | 0.5 second or more, up to 4.1 seconds |
| DTC Type | One drive cycle, MIL on |
| OBD Status | PASSED/FAILED/NOT COMPLETED (STILL TESTING) |
Enable Conditions
| Condition | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Elapsed time after starting (or stalled) the engine | 0.5 second | - |
| No active DTCs set (prevents monitor from running) | P0335, P0339, P0340, P0341, P0344 | |
| Other | In the case the engine was stalled, the intake camshaft angle must be 10 ° or more for at least 2 seconds after restarting the engine | |
Malfunction Threshold
Either one of the condition is met for at least 4.1 seconds:
Case 1
- The camshaft advanced phase angle value is 43.8 ° or more.
Case 2
- The camshaft advanced phase angle difference between actual value and target value is 20.0 ° or more.
Possible Cause
NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- VTC actuator advanced angle side stuck
- Cam chain elongation
- VTC oil control solenoid valve advanced angle side stuck
- VTC oil control solenoid valve short
Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
Start the engine, and let it idle.
With the HDS
None.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data are stored in the PCM memory.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the 12 volt battery.
