EXTERNAL MEDIA PLAYER UNIT DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY (With Navigation, With CD Player Unit) (2016 2017 2018)

NOTE:  Check the vehicle 12 volt battery condition first - Refer to:

12 Volt Battery Test (With Auto Idle Stop System) or

12 Volt Battery Test (Without Auto Idle Stop System) .

  1. Problem verification 1

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Insert an audio disc to the CD player unit.

    Is the audio disc inserted correctly?

    YES 

    The failure is not duplicated, go to step 2.

    NO 

    The failure is duplicated, go to step 6.

  2. Problem verification 2

    -1. Check if the display changes to the CD mode and the audio disc is played.

    Does the display change to the CD mode, and is the audio disc played?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

    NO: No sound

    Go to step 12.

    NO: Does not change to CD mode

    Go to step 3.

    NO: Audio disc does not play

    Go To: Audio System Symptom Troubleshooting - Audio disc does not play .

  3. Shorted wire check (GA BUS+, GA BUS- lines)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P)
    CD player unit 16P connector
    Tuner unit connector A (12P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 1 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Body ground
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 7 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The GA BUS+ and the GA BUS- wires are not shorted. Go to step 4.

  4. Shorted wire check (GA BUS+ line to GA BUS- line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 1 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 7 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wires between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The GA BUS+ wire and the GA BUS- wire are not shorted. Go to step 5.

  5. Open wire check (GA BUS+, GA BUS- lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 1 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 CD player unit 16P connector No. 5 - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018)
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 7 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 CD player unit 16P connector No. 4 - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018) .

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Replace the CD player unit - Refer to: CD Player Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  6. Determine possible failure area (GA +B and GND lines, others)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Tuner unit connector A (12P)
    CD player unit 16P connector

    - 3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CD player unit 16P connector No. 1 - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 CD player unit 16P connector No. 9 - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018) .

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Go to step 7.

  7. Determine possible failure area (GA +B line, GND line)

    -1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CD player unit 16P connector No. 9 - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    Repair an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit.

    NO 

    Go to step 8.

  8. Open wire check (GA +B line)

    -1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 12 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    Repair an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit.

    NO 

    Replace the audio-navigation unit: Audio-Navigation Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .

  9. Determine possible failure area (GA SYS ON line, others)

    -1. Reconnect the CD player unit 16P connector.

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 8 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there about 5.0 V?

    YES 

    Go to step 11.

    NO 

    Go to step 10.

  10. Open wire check (GA SYS ON line)

    -1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test point 1 CD player unit 16P connector No. 10 - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018)
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there about 5.0 V?

    YES 

    Repair an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit.

    NO 

    Replace the CD player unit - Refer to: CD Player Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .

  11. Audio-navigation unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      Rear controller and screen connector A (24P) disconnected
    Test point 1 Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) No. 8 - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there less than 0.2 V?

    YES 

    Replace the CD player unit - Refer to: CD Player Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .

    NO 

    Replace the audio-navigation unit: Audio-Navigation Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .

  12. Open wire check (GA AUDIO lines)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P)
    CD player unit 16P connector
    Tuner unit connector A (12P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test point 1: 

    CD player unit 16P connector - Refer to: CD Player Unit Connector For Inputs And Outputs (2016 2017 2018)

    Test point 2: 

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:


    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    No. 7 No. 10
    No. 8 No. 4
    No. 15 No. 9
    No. 16 No. 3

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The GA AUDIO wires are not open. Go to step 13.

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  13. Shorted wire check (GA AUDIO lines) 1

    -1. Check for continuity between following test points and body ground individually.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Connector  Terminal 
    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    No. 3
    No. 4
    No. 9
    No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wires between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The GA AUDIO wires are not shorted. Go to step 14.

  14. Shorted wire check (GA AUDIO lines) 2

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
    Test point 1: 

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:


    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test points 2: 

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:


    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    No. 3 No. 4, No. 5, No. 9, No. 10
    No. 4 No. 5, No. 9, No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the CD player unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    Replace the CD player unit - Refer to: CD Player Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .
