DTC P0010: Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) Oil Control Solenoid Valve Malfunction
General Description
The variable valve timing control (VTC) consists of the VTC actuator, the VTC oil control solenoid valve, sensors, and the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM controls the VTC oil control solenoid valve by duty cycle and supplies hydraulic pressure to the advance chamber or the retard chamber in the actuator so the valve timing is optimized depending on the driving conditions (engine load, engine speed, and vehicle speed). If the current compared to the output duty cycle is out of a set value, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold
One of these conditions is met:
- Output duty is 40 % or more and the VTC current is 200 mA or less for at least 5 seconds.
- Output duty is 5 % or less and the VTC current is 800 mA or more for at least 5 seconds.
Possible Cause
NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- VTC oil control solenoid valve VTC line short to ground
- VTC oil control solenoid valve VTC line open
- VTC oil control solenoid valve abnormal
- PCM internal circuit failure
Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
- 1. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed [ENGINE SPEED] at 3, 000 rpm without load (CVT in P or N, M/T in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.
- 2. Drive the vehicle at a steady speed between 25 - 75 mph (40 - 120 km/h) for at least 5 seconds.
- Drive the vehicle in this manner only if the traffic regulations and ambient conditions allow.

Do the VTC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data are stored in the PCM memory.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the 12 volt battery.
