Gear System Description - Shift Control System
For locations of each component on the vehicle, refer to Component Location Index.
Park Mechanism
The park mechanism locks the transmission by engaging the parking brake pawl with the parking gear which is splined with the motor shaft. The motor shaft gear which is integral with the motor shaft engages the countershaft gear which is integral with the countershaft, and the final drive gear which is splined with the countershaft engages the final driven gear.
Selecting the P position/mode switch commands the park pawl actuator turns the detent shaft to the P position. The detent shaft pushes the parking brake rod to engage the parking brake pawl with the park gear. When selecting the position/mode other than P, the park pawl actuator turns the detent shaft to the P release position to disengage the parking brake pawl from the park gear. Even if the end of the parking brake pawl rides on the top of the park gear teeth, slight movement of the vehicle will cause the parking brake pawl and the park gear to mesh with each other completely because the park brake rod spring puts tension on the parking brake cone. The parking brake pawl receives the tension (which acts to separate the parking brake pawl from the parking gear) from the parking pawl spring.
General Control Description
When the driver select one position/mode by operating the SBW shifter, the SBW shifter control module transmits a shift position signal to the park pawl actuator driver unit and the PCM. The PCM compares actual driving conditions with programmed conditions, based on the input from the SBW shifter control module and others, to perform the optimum driving under all conditions. The park position sensor outputs P position signal to the SBW shifter control module.
The shift control system includes the parking control, the automatic shifting to P position/mode control, the neutral position holding mode control, and the miss-handling prevention control.
Automatic P Position/Mode Selection Control
Automatic P Position/Mode Selection Control with Door Open
When the vehicle stops (vehicle speed is less than 1 mph (2 km/h)), if a driver disconnects the seat belt and opens the door with any other position/mode than P position/mode, P position/mode is automatically selected.
| Operating Condition for Automatic P Position/Mode Selection Control with Door Open |
|---|
| With vehicle stop: See vehicle speed less than 1 mph (2 km/h) |
| With driver's seat belt disconnection: See seat belt switch OFF signal |
| Shift position condition: R, N, and D positions/modes |
| With driver's door open: See door switch OFF signal |
After parking the vehicle in P position/mode by this mode you shift the position/mode out of P, the transmission returns to the P position/mode when you release the brake pedal unless the driver's door is closed and the driver's seat belt is fastened.
Automatic P Position/Mode Selection Control with POWER Switch OFF
When the vehicle stops (vehicle speed is less than 1 mph (2 km/h)), if a driver turned the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode with any other position/mode than P position/mode, P position/mode is automatically selected.
Neutral Position Holding Mode
This system is configured in such a way that the P position/mode is entered automatically when the vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode. For this reason, a neutral position holding mode is provided when it is desired to stay in the N position/mode even when the vehicle is in the OFF (LOCK) mode. The neutral position holding mode keeps the transmission in the N position/mode for approximately 15 minutes.
Function for Prevention of Erroneous Operation
A function for prevention of erroneous operation is provided, to ensure that the operating safety is maintained at all times, even in case of a handling error in regard to the SBW shifter assembly.
| Operations where the function for prevention of erroneous operation is activated: | Shift position after the function for prevention of erroneous operation was activated: |
|---|---|
| When the brake pedal is not pressed at the time of shifting from the P position/mode | P |
| When the accelerator pedal is pressed at the time of shifting from the P position/mode | P |
| Operations where the function for prevention of erroneous operation is activated: | Shift position after the function for prevention of erroneous operation was activated: |
