VTEC System Oil Pressure Troubleshooting (Mexico models): Inspection
Rocker Arm Oil Control Solenoid Functional Inspection
Test Procedure
- Preparation
- -
Rocker arm oil control solenoid connector (2P): disconnected
- -
- Procedure
- Jump the rocker arm oil control solenoid connector (2P) terminal No. 1 and the 12 volt battery positive terminal with a jumper wire.
- Jump the rocker arm oil control solenoid connector (2P) terminal No. 2 and the 12 volt battery negative terminal with a jumper wire.
| (Disconnected) Rocker arm oil control solenoid connector (2P) male terminals | |
- Normal Conditions
- -
There is a clicking sound from the rocker arm oil control solenoid.
- -
Results
- If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the rocker arm oil control valve.
Rocker Arm Oil Control Valve Functional Inspection (Close Operation)
Preconditions
This procedure can be done before any other inspections are completed because this test procedure includes all of the following inspection items. However, if this test fails, it will be necessary to continue with each inspection item individually to determine which item failed.
- VTEC System Oil Passage Inspection is normal
Test Procedure
Oil pressure inspection
- Preparation
- -
Engine oil: Pour engine oil to the specified level
- -
Engine oil pressure: The low oil pressure warning message is not displayed on with the engine running
- -
- Procedure
- Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- Remove the bolt (A) from the rocker arm oil control valve (B), and attach the oil pressure hose (C), the pressure gauge adapter (D), the A/T pressure adapter (E), the A/T pressure test hose (F), and the A/T low pressure gauge w/panel (G) as shown, then attach the bolt with specified torque to the pressure gauge adapter.
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on.
- Check the VTEC oil pressure at the engine speed of 1,000 to 2,000 rpm.NOTE:
Keep the measuring time as short as possible (less than 1 minute).
- Normal Conditions
- -
The oil pressure is below 49 kPa (0.5 kgf/cm 2, 7 psi) .
- -
Results
- If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the rocker arm oil control valve.
Rocker Arm Oil Control Valve Functional Inspection (Open Operation)

- Normal Conditions
- -
The oil pressure is above 392 kPa (4.00 kgf/cm 2, 56.9 psi) .
- -
Results
- If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the rocker arm oil control valve.
VTEC System Oil Passage Inspection
Test Procedure
- Preparation
- -
Rocker arm oil control valve: removed
- -
- Procedure
- -
Check for dirt or clogs in the VTEC system oil passage and the rocker arm oil control valve filter.
- -
- Normal Conditions
- -
There is no dirt or clogs.
- -
Results
- If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the VTEC system oil passage.NOTE:
If there is the problem, replace the engine oil and the engine oil filter after repairing it.
PCM Inspection
Test Procedure
- If the other inspection item(s) indicated a normal condition, then it is determined that the remaining PCM is the cause.
Results
- There is a problem with the PCM.
