The fuel (pressure) discharged from the high pressure fuel pump is released by the pressure relief valve so that the internal pressure of the fuel rail does not become excessive. When the relief valve opens, the fuel pressure drops rapidly. The relief valve opening is detected based on the fuel pressure lowering speed.At high engine speed and high load, depending on the operating environment (Product tolerance, fuel temperature, fuel type, etc.), there are areas where the fuel pressure drop speed cannot be distinguished. In such an area, if it is determined that the fuel pressure drop speed is high, the abnormality is not determined at this point, when the fuel pressure drops to the fuel pressure at the time of relief, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.
