- Wait at least 3 minutes, after disconnecting the 12 volt battery terminal.
NOTICE:
- If you are replacing the driver's airbag after a deployment, refer to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment - Refer to: Airbag and Tensioner Disposal () or SRS Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment () for a complete list of other parts that must also be replaced.
- If the driver's airbag deployed, the cable reel cannot be reused because of thermal damage.
Preconditions
Sub-Procedure
Removal
- Insert a punch (a) through the hole of the steering body cover and push the spring (b) to release the driver's airbag pin (c) while pulling out the airbag. Repeat for the other sides. (Figure 1)
Punch Specifications (Figure 1)
Standard Value d 5.5 mm (0.217 in) Figure 1
Installation
1. Install the driver's airbag (e) by pushing it in until you hear a click. (Figure 2)
NOTE:Confirm that the driver's airbag pins are securely mounted to the springs.
Figure 2
2. Make sure the clearance (f) between the steering wheel and horn pad is the specified value. (Figure 3)
Specifications (Figure 3)
Standard Value f 3.0 ± 0.5 mm (0.118 ± 0.020 in) Figure 3
After Installation
- 12 Volt Battery Terminal Reconnect
- Make sure the horn works properly.
- Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.
- B.-
Preconditions
- Front Wheels Straight Ahead Positioned
Sub-Procedure
Removal
NOTE: Remove the old sealant from the threads in the column shaft.

Installation
NOTICE:
A new cable reel is locked by a yellow tab for center adjustment. When installing the new cable reel there is no need to rotate the cable. After the tab is removed, discard it after installing the cable reel.
1. Make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
2. Rotate the cable reel (a) clockwise until it stops. (Figure 1)
3. Rotate the cable reel counterclockwise until the arrow mark (b) on the cable reel points straight up. (Figure 1)
4. Rotate the cable reel counterclockwise two full turns. The arrow mark on the cable reel should point straight up.
Figure 2
5. Position the steering wheel hub (c) so that it engages the pin (d) of the cable reel. (Figure 2)
NOTE:When installing the steering wheel, do not give an impact in the axial direction of the column shaft.
Figure 3
6. Install a new bolt (e), and tighten it to the specified torque. (Figure 3)
NOTE:Make sure that the cable reel subharness (f) is routed above the SRS harness (g). (Figure 3)
NOTE: Install the bolt and tighten it within 5 minutes to the specified tightening torque.
After Installation
- Check the operation of the switch on the steering wheel.
- Check the steering wheel spoke angle. If steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel is not centered), correct the engagement of the wheel/column shaft splines.
- VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization - Refer to: VSA Modulator-Control Unit Update () or VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization ()
- Drive straight and check that the steering wheel is in the straight position.
- C.-
Preconditions
- Adjust the steering column to the full tilt down position, and to the full telescopic out position.
Sub-Procedure
Removal
- Release the clips, then lift up the dashboard meter visor blind cover (a).
