WEAK ALTERNATORS - INCREASING CHARGING RATE

YEAR(S): 1988

MANUFACTURER: Hyundai

MODEL(S): Excel

ISSUE & TIP

On some 1988 Hyundai Excels, the alternator seems to be too light to handle the load of all the accessories at the same time, especially at idle. The fusible link block seems to add resistance to the circuit, compounding the problem.

After installing three alternators on different cars, I decided to see if I could do anything to improve the situation. I knew that I couldn't install a more powerful alternator, so added an extra wire between the alternator B+ terminal and the battery positive terminal instead. This allowed the alternator to increase its charging rate under load by a measurable amount and seems to have corrected the problem.
