Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

IDLE SPEED / TIMING CHECK PROCEDURES

Checking Conditions

- Engine coolant temperature is 80 to 95° C (176 to 205° F).
- Lights, electric cooling fan and all accessories are off.
- Transaxle is in neutral or in "P" or "N" range for A/T vehicles.
- Steering wheel is straight forward position (Vehicles with power steering).

Procedure





1. Install a tachometer and a timing light.

Connecting Jumper To Terminal:





2. Ground the ignition timing adjustment terminal.
3. Run the engine and let it idle.
4. Check the basic ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

Basic ignition timing: 50 ± 2° BTDC at idle

5. Remove the lead wire connected at step 2.
6. Let the engine idle for 2 minutes.
7. Check the idle speed.

Idle speed: 700 ± 100 rpm

NOTE: Adjustment of the idling speed is usually unnecessary, because this system controls the Idle speed.
