COLD STUMBLE AND P0116 (ECT OPERATION) ECM REPROGRAMMING

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): 03-36-017, Date of Issue:  September, 2003
HYUNDAI: 2000-2002 Accent
GROUP: 36 - Engine Electrical
Superceded Bulletin(s): 01-36-013, 02-36-018

DESCRIPTION

  1. Some 2000-2002 Accents with 1.5L SOHC and 1.6L DOHC engines may experience the following symptoms in the summer (hot and humid weather):
    • Slower than usual acceleration after an initial cold start (engine is cold soaked).
    • Greater than usual rpm drop when engaging drive or reverse (on ATM equipped vehicles) after an initial cold start.
  2. Some 2002 1.6L Accents may turn on the "Check Engine" light and store the diagnostic trouble code P0116 (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Range/Performance Problem) in the ECM. This code can be falsely set under certain driving conditions. Check the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor to make sure that it's functioning properly. When the engine is cold soaked, the ECT and Intake Air Temperature should read approximately the same temperature. When the engine is fully warmed-up, the ECT should read about 190° F to 200° F (depending on the cooling fan cycle). If the code has been set falsely, perform the ECM software reprogramming procedure using the Hi-Scan Pro as outlined below.

The ECM program has been revised to improve BOTH of the above described conditions.

The following procedure describes updating the ECM software, using the Hi-Scan Pro.

NOTE: This new reprogramming software (#31) supersedes the previous reprograms for "Cold Stumble" (#7 = TSB 01-36-013 and #13 = TSB 02-36-018).

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Cold Stumble:  All 2000-2002 ACCENT vehicles with 1.5L SOHC and 1.6L DOHC engines.

P0116:  2002 Accent with 1.6L DOHC engine.

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING

  1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
  2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.
WARNING: If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
  3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
  4. Do not turn the ignition key off during reprogramming.
  5. When the reprogramming is completed, turn off the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

NOTE: Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.

AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE

  1. Attach the DLC (Data Link Connector) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro main body and tighten the 2 bolts securely. (Fig 2 )

    G00317885
  2. Remove the current system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card (with the new ECM program) into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.
  3. Plug the DLC cable from the Hi-Scan Pro into the data link connector (16-pin connector, Fig 3 ) to the left of the steering wheel under the instrument panel.

    G00317887
  7. Select option "01. LC 00~02 MY COLD STUMBLE [AUTO]" and press ENTER. This option automatically detects the ECM type and downloads the correct program.
  8. Enter "1229" as the password for the automatic update mode and press ENTER. (Fig 5 )

    G00317890
    NOTE:
    • The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current ECM ID, assigns the new ECM ID and displays them for a short time.
    • To be prepared in case a reprogramming error occurs, write down the "NEW ECM ID" displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen during reprogramming.
    • It will be used during the Manual Update Procedure if the program does not download correctly.
    • If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section.
    • Check the ECM IDs displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM software is being downloaded. Refer to Fig 1 above for the ECM ID listing.

    G00317891
WARNING: Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.
  10. When the COMPLETED message is displayed (Fig 8 ), turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF and the process is complete.

NOTE: When reprogramming has been completed successfully, turn the ignition to the OFF position for 20 seconds and then start the engine to check for proper operation.

MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE

NOTE: In the event menu option "01. LC 00-02MY COLD STUMBLE [AUTO]" fails to download the new ECM program, option "02. LC 00-02MY COLD STUMBLE [ERROR]" must be used.
  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER.
  3. Select menu option "31. LC 00~02MY COLD STUMBLE&02MY P0116" and press ENTER. (Fig 4 )
