Inspection Procedures

  1. PROBLEM VERIFICATION
    1. Connect a Hi-Scan (Pro) to the data link connector and turn ignition switch to ON position.
    2. Using the Hi-Scan (Pro) monitor the FTPS voltage signals.
    • Specification: approximately 2.5V at idle

    Is voltage within specification?

    No: Go to next

Yes: Problem is intermittent or was repaired and engine control module memory was not cleared. Proceed with INTERMITTENT PROBLEM PROCEDURE  .

  2. VISUALLY CHECK FTPS FOR CONNECTOR CONDITION
    1. Thoroughly check the FTPS for loose, bent, corroded, contaminated, deteriorated or damaged connectors.

    Is any problem present?

    No: Go to next

    Yes: Repair or replace it.

  3. CHECK REFERENCE VOLTAGE TO FTPS
    1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect the FTPS connector.
    2. Turn ignition switch to ON position and measure the voltage between terminal 1 of the FTPS harness connector and chassis ground.

    • Specification: approximately 5V

    Is voltage within specifications?

    Yes: Go to next

No: Repair open or short to ground in harness.

  4. CHECK FOR SHORT TO POWER IN HARNESS
    1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect the ECM connector.
    2. Turn ignition switch to ON position and measure the voltage between terminal 3 of the FTPS harness connector and chassis ground.

    • Specifications: below 0.5V

    Is voltage within specifications?

    Yes: Go to next

No: Repair short to power in harness.

  5. CHECK FOR OPEN IN HARNESS
    1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and keep the ECM and FTPS connectors disconnected.
    2. Measure resistance between terminal 3 of the FTPS harness connector and 33 of the ECM harness connector.
    3. Measure resistance between terminal 2 of the FTPS harness connector and 34 of the ECM harness connector.

    • Specification: below 1ohm

      Does each resistance indicate continuity?

Yes: Proceed with ECM PROBLEM PROCEDURE  .

    No: Repair open in harness.
