Inspection Procedures

  1. PROBLEM VERIFICATION
    1. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
    2. Using a Hi-Scan (Pro), monitor the TPS signals while slowly opening the throttle.

Is signal within specification and consistent with the normal curve?

    No: Go to next

Yes: Problem is intermittent or was repaired and engine control module memory was not cleared. Proceed with INTERMITTENT PROBLEM PROCEDURE  .

  2. CHECK TPS SENSOR AND ECM CONNECTORS
    1. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage.

    Are all connectors good?

    Yes: Go to next

    No: Repair or replace it.

  3. CHECK TPS
    1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect TPS connector.
    2. Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the TPS.
    3. Measure resistance between terminals 2 and 3 of the TPS.

    Is resistance within specification?

    Yes: Go to next

    No: Replace TPS.

  4. CHECK POWER TO TPS
    1. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
    2. Measure TPS voltage between terminal 3 of the TPS harness connector and chassis ground.

    • Specification: approximately 5V

    Is voltage within specification?

    Yes: Go to next

No: Repair open or short to chassis ground in harness.

  5. CHECK FOR OPEN IN HARNESS
    1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
    2. Disconnect ECM connector.
    3. Measure resistance of TPS ground harness between terminal 2 of the TPS harness connector and terminal 38 of the ECM harness connector.
    4. Measure resistance of TPS signal harness between terminal 1 of the TPS harness connector and terminal 32 of the ECM harness connector.

    • Specification: below 1ohm

    Does each resistance indicate continuity?

    Yes: Go to next

    No: Repair open in harness.

  6. CHECK FOR SHORT TO POWER IN HARNESS
    1. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
    2. Measure voltage of TPS signal harness between terminal 1 of the TPS harness connector and chassis ground.

      • Specification: below 0.5V

      Is voltage within specification?

Yes: Proceed with ECM PROBLEM PROCEDURE  .

No: Repair short to power in harness.
