Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS)

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) measures the temperature of engine coolant. The ECTS is located near the thermostat housing of the cylinder head. The sensor is a thermistor that changes its resistance values in line with temperature. When the engine is cold, the ECTS resistance is high; when the engine is warm, the ECTS resistance is low. The signal from the ECTS is used for controlling fuel injection, ignition timing, idle speed and the operation of a cooling fan. In order to enhance ignition performance, the Engine Control Module (ECM) administers the fuel injection volume and the ignition timing based on the coolant temperature information during a cold start.
