Ignition Timing

  1. Ensure that no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present. See TESTS W/CODES article. Start engine, and warm to normal operating temperature. Operate engine for 2 minutes at 2000 RPM under no-load. Check for smooth engine operation.
  2. Turn engine off. Disconnect throttle position sensor connector. Start engine and snap throttle to 2000-3000 RPM, 2 or 3 times, under no-load and then allow engine to return to idle.
  3. Connect timing light to cylinder No. 1 spark plug wire. Check ignition timing. See IGNITION TIMING  table. If necessary, adjust timing by loosening distributor mounting bolts and turning distributor. Reconnect throttle position sensor connector.

G20 13-17 @ 700-800
(1) With transmission in Neutral and no electrical load on engine.
