INTRODUCTION
Infiniti has recently learned that the control unit for the air bag system does not work as well as we expected in a rare, high-speed off-set crash situation. We improved the air bag control unit and are using it in FX vehicles that are now being manufactured.
To maintain the highest levels of product quality, product safety and customer satisfaction in the 2003 FX35/45, Infiniti wants to reprogram the air bag control unit in vehicles manufactured prior to September 11, 2003 so that it will be the same as the improved control unit. This will assure optimum performance of the airbag system.
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Nissan has assigned identification number P3156 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.
NUMBER OF VEHICLES POTENTIALLY AFFECTED
The number of vehicles potentially affected is approximately 25,000.
DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the Infiniti dealer's responsibility to check Infiniti Net for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this Voluntary Service Campaign (P3156) that enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in an Infiniti dealer's inventory.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Use the special reprogramming card titled "Air Bag Control Unit Service Campaign (P3156)" to reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit. See below for details.
The following procedure should be performed by an OBDII Certified technician.
Important Information About Air Bag Control Unit Reprogramming and The Special Reprogramming Card:
- This is a special procedure just for this campaign.
- Your dealership was supplied with the special reprogramming card for this campaign. The card was sent by way of Fed Ex to each dealer's Service Manager.
- This card already contains all the software needed for this campaign. Data files are NOT available in ASIST.
- If the special reprogramming card is inoperable, contact the Technical Support Department at 310-771-3573.
- Install the special reprogramming card "Air Bag Control Unit Service Campaign (P3156)" [Orange 16MB] into slot A of CONSULT-II (see Fig 1
).
CAUTION: Do NOT allow the vehicle's battery voltage to drop below 12.0 volts during reprogramming. Permanent damage can occur if the battery does not maintain the minimum voltage during the reprogramming period.
- Connect CONSULT-II to the vehicle making sure the connector is fully plugged in.
- Confirm that all electrical loads (except for the ignition) such as headlights, defroster, A/C, Audio (radio), cellular telephone, etc. are "OFF'.CAUTION: Do NOT unplug CONSULT-II from the vehicle while reprogramming. Do NOT attempt reprogramming with any vehicle electrical loads "ON" except for the ignition. Permanent damage can occur.
- Turn the ignition switch "ON", but do not start the engine. CONSULT-II will turn "ON" automatically.
- Press SUB MODE, (see Fig 2 ), then select BATTERY CHARGE.
- Check the vehicle's battery voltage reading on the CONSULT-II screen (see Fig 3
).NOTE:
- Confirm CONSULT-II is receiving suitable voltage from the vehicle's battery.
- The vehicle's battery voltage is called "CHARGER INPUT" and MUST be above 12.00 volts when reprogramming.
CAUTION: Do NOT allow the vehicle's battery voltage to drop below 12.0 volts during reprogramming. Permanent damage can occur if the battery does not maintain the minimum voltage during the reprogramming period. - Press BACK (see Fig 3 ).
- Press START REPROGRAMMING FOR THE AIRBAG ECU (see Fig 4 ).
- Check the "CURRENT ECU DISCRIMINATED NUMBER" on the CONSULT-II reprogramming screen (see Fig 5
):
- If the "CURRENT ECU DISCRIMINATED NUMBER" is "FD02" or "FD03", the Air Bag Control Unit needs to be reprogrammed. Press YES on the Reprogramming screen (see Fig 5 ) to continue with the reprogramming (see step 10).
- If the "CURRENT ECU DISCRIMINATED NUMBER" is "FD04", the Air Bag Control Unit does NOT need to be reprogrammed. Press COPY and attach the CONSULT-II screen printout to the Repair Order. Then press NO.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF and then back ON within 5 seconds. Then press OK (see Fig 6
) to start Air Bag ECU reprogramming. It takes about 10 seconds to complete the reprogramming.
- If the reprogramming is successful, print out the CONSULT-II screen (see Fig 7 ) and attach it to the Repair Order, then press END.
- If the reprogramming was NOT successful ("Communication Error Detected" message on the CONSULT-II screen), check the cables and connections, then retry reprogramming (return to step 8).
