Valve Clearance Adjustment: M45
- Turn crankshaft to position cam lobe on camshaft of valve that must be adjusted upward. Thoroughly wipe off engine oil around adjusting shim using a rag. See Fig 1.
- Using a extra-fine screwdriver, turn the round hole of the adjusting shim in the direction of the arrow.
- Place Camshaft Pliers (J38972-1) (A) around camshaft. See figure Fig 2.
- Rotate camshaft pliers so that valve lifter is pushed down. Place Lifter Stopper Tool (J38972-2) (B) between camshaft and the edge of the valve lifter to retain valve lifter. See Fig 3.
- Remove camshaft pliers. Blow air into the hole to separate adjusting shim from valve lifter.
- Remove adjusting shim using a small screwdriver and a magnetic finger. See Fig 4.
- To determine replacement shim size, measure thickness of removed shim at center of shim with a micrometer. Calculate thickness of new shim so valve clearance is within specifications.
- Use the following formula to determine replacement shim size:
- R = Thickness of removed shim.
- N = Thickness of new shim.
- M = Measured valve clearance.
- Intake: N = R + [M -.0118 in. (.300 mm)]
- Exhaust: N = R + [M -.0130 in. (.330 mm)]
- Shims are available in 64 sizes from 0.0913 in. (2.32 mm) to 0.1161 in. (2.95 mm) in steps of 0.0004 in. (0.01 mm).
- Select new shim with thickness as close as possible to calculated value.
- Using a suitable tool, install new shim with side on which thickness is stamped facing down. Rotate camshaft pliers again to remove lifter stopper.
- Recheck valve clearance (cold value). Warm engine and check valve clearance again (hot value). See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS .

NOTE:
Before placing Camshaft Pliers (J38972-1) (A), rotate cam lobe toward center of cylinder head (1) to simplify shim removal later.
NOTE:
Be careful to NOT damage cam surface with camshaft pliers.
NOTE:
Lifter Stopper Tool (J38972-2) (B) must be placed as close to camshaft bracket as possible.
NOTE:
Wear proper eye protection for following procedure.
